Can a person who generally votes democratic be strongly against illegal immigration?
|
Sometimes one may not agree with his or her political party on an issue. That is one of the things which makes our political system so wholesome, fair, and representative of the people. Along those lines, I'd love to congratulate and support all of those democrates who DO NOT SUPPORT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION! I've heard the arguments, but I do not understand why anyone would say that it is ok for anyone to reside in the US illegally, without documentation. No one can "take" what isn't theirs and then claim that it's a civil right. Any such person has totally lost their credibility with me.
DEMOCRATS AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION:
WE EXIST! Absolutely, no way!!!!!!!!

Yep! Here I am!
I typically vote democrat, and overall am pretty liberal in my beliefs. But on the issue of illegal immigration, I have to agree with the other side. They are criminal, they are breaking our laws, and they are doing it as "the easy way". If they want a better life, maybe they need to buck up and change things in their own country. |

I'm Republican but it's nice to see a democrat who knows that it's wrong! |

I really don't see the illegal alien problem as a party thing. I see it as an American issue, that affects people of all parties, and one which concerns and angers people of all parties. Maybe we finally have an issue that will remind us to be Americans first, party second. None of the politicians (or very few) are listening to the voices of the citizens.
Maybe its time we all work together. And yes, I do recognize that there are Dems against illegal aliens, as much as there are Reps against it. |

I'm a democrat and I am completely against illegal immigration and I agree whole-heartily with you. |

Sure. I am. Just because you more strongly identify with a particular political party doesn't mean you have to agree with every position they take. I agree with you... I'm apalled by the idea of just accepting this flagrant disregard for the rule of law in this country. And I'm tired of hearing hard luck stories in the media about these criminals intended to pull at my heart strings. You don't want to be arrested? Don't break the law! |

Yes. Gov. Richardson of AZ is a Dem running for Pres. and he is strongly against illegal immigration. This problem crosses party lines. Write to your congressmen and tell them how you feel. |

I am. It is illegal for a reason. No country can allow unlimited immigration, because resources are limited.
Unfortunately, this is a major plan to break labor forever, and the people behind it could care less about the public. This is part of the correction for Roosevelt's "New Deal," the wealthy taking America back.
It's an avalanche. |

Yes, a person can vote Democratic and be against illegal immigration. The fact is that both parties cover a lot of different issues. It would be silly to vote one way or another just based on one thing. So you could be against illegal immigration, but still support better education, fiscal responsibility (remember when that used to be a Republican thing?), better environmental law, etc. etc.
I have not heard a single argument against illegal immigrants that is accurate or makes any sense. Arguments that they cost us money are pretty weak, with little evidence to back it up. There are all these myths that suggest that they get special treatment, but the fact is that if an illegal immigrant applied for benefits or social security, they would be found out and deported. You show me an illegal immigrant that gets good benefits, and I'll show you some oceanfront property in Wyoming. The only people that get any support from us are their children, who do attend our schools. You want to turn away children from schools? That is pretty sad. I think it is unpatriotic to suggest that our country isn't good enough to handle the children of migrant workers. We can do anything we want if we try.
Meanwhile, if we caught all 12 million of them today (which is only .04% of our total population) and deported them, guess what? The price of food would skyrocket, because the food industry relies heavily on these workers (who work very cheaply with NO benefits) to fill important manual labor positions that American citizens simply do not want to do. The majority of illegal immigrants work this kind of job, the dirty, bottom of the barrel jobs that no one wants. This would cause an economic crisis in this country that would easily be greater than any supposed money these people cost us today. The cost of getting rid of these people or building a useless fence across the border would make the situation even worse, not to mention cost us billions in taxes that could be put to better use.
Ah, but they are illegal. If they weren't illegal, then it would be ok? If the problem is "illegal," then I agree that illegal immigrants should not be here... but we should provide them with the means of being legal. How many Americans even know what an immigrant has to do to become a legal immigrant? Less than a percentage point. So how do you expect immigrants to find out, when they have less resources and ability to get information than all of us here with computers? Everyone says they want them to go through the process and be legal, but no one wants to help them to do this. This suggests that the REAL reason you don't want them here is the "immigrant" part, and not the "illegal" part. Considering that we are all descendents of immigrants, I think that is pretty sick. As a Democrat, I would think that you would be opposed to racism. If it isn't racism, then what else is there? |

I think it's rediculous that you would even question your own opinion simply because you vote for a political party. Seriously, that is a serious problem with this country. People are too scared to have their own opinions on political topics because they might look like they are changing sides. Just stupid. |

Of course -- Democrats have classically supported workers rights...these rights (OSHA protection, minimum wage rules, etc ) are not guaranteed to those outside the system, and undermine those hard-won rights of those here legally.. |

I've never understood how people could be affiliated with one party only. Issues like this come up, and people view it differently. I wouldn't be able to commit to a 'whole political groups' way of thinking. I'd be leery that they can all be thinking and agreeing on the same point of view. |

Good for you. I am voting against everyone who supports this latest try at amnesty. This issue is as important as education and health care because it has a huge impact on both. The politicians and people have realized that we must get out of Iraq and it will happen soon, no matter which way I vote. So illegal immigration is at the top of my voting issues. |

A democrat can be against illegal immigration, abortion, gun control or gay marriage. Typically not all at once though. |

no matter how one feels about immigration let me just say this: No nation on earth can sustain these kinds of numbers in such a short period of time with no oversight. We are domed as a nation. We will be crushed by the numbers. Then we can all starve together. Oh yeah, I'm a Democrat. |

It's certainly possible for someone to take that stance. I would expect it to be most comon among an old-school union member (say, from the AFL-CIO or the ILW), but not from the modern service unions that count a lot of illegal immigrants as members. Someone who believes that it is important for the U.S. government to protect the jobs of U.S. citizens. This person is probably also opposed to free-trade agreements and in favor of a generally protectionist trade agenda.
Or they are a strong anti-Hispanic racist (Please, I'm not saying you are, I'm just trying to provide profiles for people who could reasonably taking this stance).
Mind you, I think that being anti-illegal immigration is fine and all, but that doesn't help us shape any kind of policy for our current situation--it's more complicated than just saying "NO, go away." |

ya..but it wont do much good...
There is such a thing as a "political platform" and the party of which you are affiliated with...will go with that platform regardless of your stand against what ever is part of it...savvy? so you say you don't believe in abortion or gun control or gay marriage...you really do because you supported the platform.. its called talking out of both sides of your mouth..you just voted for their platform when you vote pretty much. |
