Can anybody put forward any ideas about solving the immigration problem in the UK?

They should be able to have a conversation in English.
They should have a sponsor in this country who should be held responsible for them in case they run out of money.
They should be tested for Aids and T.B before arrival.
They should have at least Â£5,000 in cash in order to keep themselves until they find work.
Initially they should only be allowed to stay for 6 months and if they haven't found jobs they be transported back to their own country without leave of appeal.
If they are convicted of a criminal offence they should be put out and barred from this country along with all members of their families.
That sounds perfectly reasonable to me and it would apply to any
immigrant.

there is a difference between economic migrants and asylum seekers.

Economic migrants are vital to our economy and often do the jobs that British nationals cannot do / do not want to do. they tend to work hard, pay their way and contribute to thee success of our economy. From my point of view they are welcome.

Then we have so called "asylum seekers".

No doubt I will be accused of racism, but here goes... the majority of so called asylum seekers are nothing more than parasites.

If they were really fleeing oppression and violence, they would be happy to stop at the first "safe" country they visit - but NO. they travel through Germany, France, Italy and then wait in camps in Sangatte or Calais until the gutless french authorities turn a blind eye and assist them to cross the Channel into UK.

Why ? because we are a soft touch.

We have nothing to fear from genuine economic migrants. Bogus asylum seekers are another matter. How to deal with them ?

1. keep them in secure holding camps until their claim is investigated
2. if they are bogus (as most are) send them straight back
3. make them work for their benefits rather than giving them hand-outs

The European Union does not help this, to solve part of our problem would be to end Britains subscription to the EU.
Place a small ammount of British soliders at Air ways, ports etc.
Perhaps the idea of taking a test to be let in the UK or maybe they should take the Oath of alligiance to Her Majesty.

When you mean immigration - do you mean people who come here illegally?

I married a man from abroad - he was from a poor background with no real chance of a good quality life. I know what you are thinking he only married you for a passport for the UK.
But actually how easy is it to come and live in this country?
It took me six months to get him here on a spouse visa - they have no right to claim anything from the government as i do not either for the first two years, when you are assessed and then it is decided whether they can stay here permenantly (they believe you are actually husband and wife). The government check every single detail of your life from money to accomodation.

It took me six months to get him into an English class because there were no places - are you aware of how many people have actually taken up english classes anyway?

Don't even get me started on the job front - do you know how many people offered him a job with no tax, national insurance contributions? starting at Â£2.00 an hour - night shifts - over 70 hours a week - i am not joking- the minimum wage is Â£5.35.

I think there is a lot that goes on in this country that people do not know about and is not reported.

He didn't take an illegal job BTW - it took us a while but i got him a properly paid one with tax and national insurance.

The stress and upheaveal that people go through, leaving friends family and language/ cultures is huge so i think some of them do need a break and actually why are they leaving?

If we can go and bomb countries kill thousands of people why can't we for once from a privilaged position go and try and make a difference to someone's life?

The majority of people who are fiercely against immigration are not aware of the history of their own country themselves, they should widen their knowledge of british and world history and maybe their hatred will disappear. Many immigrants are essential for the economy, and already have university degrees that are not accepted here.

I guess you need to look at the reason people come to Britain first. There are two differing reasons for coming to the UK

1. Immigrants arrive by choice, to offer their skills to the UK market force. These people are not asylum seekers and are a benefit to the UK economy. Therefore, we should just help them integrate and learn the culture and basic language.

2. Immigrants arrive by desperation. These people are either refugees in danger through war or political persecution Otherwise they're asylum seekers escaping desperate poverty and disease.

These people don't have a life goal of coming to the UK. It's survival.

The solution is to look at preventing the situation that forces people to re-locate. If we let Africa into the free trade market and made medical drugs available at cost price, we would change Africa for good.

If we stopped waging wars, we would reduce the refugees by millions. If we then used our forces to end militia gangs that murder civilians in Asian & African countries, we would reduce the refugees by millions more.

Most immigrants don't want to be here, but are forced here by events. We can solve much of this, but governments refuse to offer real solutions because of greed.

Really good question but difficult.

People say get the UK out of the E.U. I am not going to express my views on this due to reasons.

So anyway :-
1. All Immigrants must adapt to our way of life.
2. All Immigrants must pass a simple english test and then when living in the UK must be able to speak it quite fluently.
3. All Immigrants must work if possible and they get the same wages as everyone else depending on their skill.

First of all, I don't get when people have problems with some other people coming in from abroad. This world is for everyone, isn't it?
But anyway,the answer to your question all depends on what you exactly mean by 'immigration problem', but if you are talking about stopping people coming from abroad especially illegally, then I think the solution to that is to stop the war/poverty/collapsed government in their countries. You have to know that no one actually likes to be an illegal immigrant, but they had no choice, if they wanted to live.
And UK and many other rich countries are not normally innocent for those things to happen, as UK has invaded some countries, causing war there, or selling weapons to those collapsed governments to earn some money. Also, colonisation that UK did left huge scars in many countries, and as a result they have very bad governments.
The solution is, I think, stop making the matter worse, and try to start doing something actually good for them. Help those people to help themselves in their country. If everyone wants it, we can always stop whatever war that's happening, and if everyone wants it, there is more than enough to share for all of us.

I doubt any English person can say that they are truly English, we are all Immigrants really, but if new people want in then they should do the decent thing, the code our ancestors followed when arriving at our coast for the first time; slaughter all the natives, claim the land as their own and interbreed with the native women over time in the hope of removing racial differences.

OR: Passport/ Visa checks up to maybe half a mile inland from ports, more rigorous searches of transports likely to be carrying immigrants coupled with harsher penalties for people who try to bring them.

Also, people who attempt to enter the country illegally are criminals and should be treated as such(the cushy treatment of inmates in Britain is another matter)
No Holiday camp resorts while they are waiting for deportation, a process which needs to speed up dramatically. If they are to be sent back against their will simply tell them that they either confess to their origins or get dumped in the ocean. Seems harsh but you can bet that we'd far fewer benefit leeches then.

Make it clear that any one who comes to this country from abroad and breaks the law gets sent straight home, no appeals, no free legal aid, no compensation, just a ticket.
This is not racist, its common sense.

good source for this is http://www.migrationwatchuk.org/ lot of info there, however as to solving a problem we have to really decide what it is, has been suggested that the numbers are wrong in respect of estimates made before additional countries joined the EU. That said applications should be cross checked on originators criminal record database as well as UK's and interpol too make sure we are not bringing in known criminals. Better checks before granting visas of any type is a must

As someone else stated " What is the immigration problem" Too many? Too few? Too many of one race/religion/ethnic background?

At the moment the UK is part of the EU, and must abide by EU Regulations. I don't think leaving the EU is a runner as UK economics are, in a large part, dependant on EU free trade.

As regards a language test.....two points:

1. If they could speak Welsh (a recognised language of the UK) would that suffice?

2. Should the same principle be applied to UK citizens living in France, Spain, Cyprus,etc?

instead of stopping immigration what to do is have a restbite, put immigration on a pause due to internal problems, and bring it back when problems are solvced and tempers have died down I recon that should take about twenty years,doing it this way you are banning nobody, so there is no racism, and no ethnic cleansing. but the first thing is to find out who is making money out of bringing them in.

immigration from the new European countries is happening because these people are prepared to work very hard for very little.

they are helping the economy as long as the employer registers, if there was to be a solution these jobs would have to be made more attractive to British people.

Compulsory English test is an idea or even a British test on history etc similar to the US culminating with the oath of allegiance

Oh, so you mean the problems associated with illegal immigrants, as opposed to those of us who immigrated legally and with government approval and had to pay for visas and aren't allowed to claim benefits and things.

You need to clarify, because immigration is a good thing, it is controlled and totally legal. It is the difference between getting medicine from the phamacy and buying drugs on the street corner.

All countries have problems with illegal immigrants and unless you want even tougher controls at airports, docks and train stations, it is very hard to do anything about it. Most illegal immigrants are not criminals (though some are) they just want a better life. They are people too.

I think the govenerment is doing what it can short of door to door searches.

It's not a question of "Do we let people in to our wonderful country?" It's more about "Why do they want to come over?" Usually the answer to this is that it is economically better over here.

Maybe instead of getting all Alf Garnet about it all, we should see what we can do to help them get their own countries as economically secure as ours, then they won't need to come over!

Perhaps we should introduce a points system like other Commonwealth countries and only let people in who are going to benefit the country as a whole,rather than let anybody in and then deal with them once here which put extra strain on a already overloaded system.

I am in no way against people coming to this country ethnic diversity is how Britain works now, but I do think that in a lot of cases unfortunately the people who come over here make no real contribution to society. I think their English should be tested, and if not good enough more education would be needed, they must also be able to work or volunteer. I make a contribution to this country and if other people wish to live here and be governed under the same laws then they should do the same.

There are no good enough answer for this question,but there are thing i will let you and every one know. Tell most economical advance countries like UK and America to stop their oppression on less economic advance countries so they can develop too.2 about telling people to lean the English language before they should be allow to stay here, tell me has anyone tells you to lean any other countries language before you stay there? Perhaps not fluent 85% of immigrant in this country can speak English and write better that some bone citizen.Meanwhile, its act of imperialism and racism from you if you expect every body in this country to be speaking English.

This may seem a little drastic but I should close the borders until a suitable new Bill can be made. Wether that's by votes in the House of Commons or a full National Referendum, I can't say which is best.
The Bill could involve: only skilled workers, compulsory English tests, no criminal record in any form and a contract for immigrants so they must sign to say that if they should break a serious British law (murder etc.) or a lesser crime but continually (non-violent robberies, ASB) then they must, under the contract be moved back to their homeland.
But, after the new legislation is set up to run smoothly, the borders should be reopened and any problems SHOULD have been solved.
- One problem about that though is how will the EU react? They won't be pleased.
