Can anyone give me one good reason for having the welfare system?

Simple fix, what do you think?

Try this experiment.

Put a bird feeder in your yard and fill it with bird seed.

It doesn't take long before the birds learn that a free meal is in the offing. They come by the hundreds.

Now, empty the feeder. What happens? No more birds.

Take away the free medical care. Take away the free schooling. Take away the free welfare. Take away the jobs. What happens? No more illegals. WOW!! What a simple solution!

No need for a border fence at the cost of hundreds of millions of tax dollars.

Yes, I am with you. I read the other answers and as proud as they are of our so called wonderful welfare system, I doubt none of these people ever had to apply for it. It is a frustrating and very humiliating progress to go through. I have been hurt in two back to back accidents, within 5 weeks of one another, that was in 02 and I am receiving full disability. A whopping $768 a month to support me and my son on. I have always worked, always paid my taxes and now am being treated like a second class citizen. What the heck is that anyway? Second class citizen? However, when I stand in line at the grocery store and see illegal immegrants using foodstamps to buy lobsters and get WIC (women, infant, children) help, it makes me sick! Yes, this country helps but in my opinion, they ought to help their own, before everyone else. Just look at the war we are fighting and losing all those wonderful young men and woman. Thanks for letting me rant and rave; unfortunately that doesn't answer your questions and I usually make it a point to help as much as I can but sometimes even I lose my cool, especially when it comes to this subject. BTW, I am sorry for all those nasty answers you got on here. But like I said, these people probably never were in the position (thank God they never had to experience it!) that put them into the welfare system. I do NOT collect welfare btw, I only get what is due to me and what I've worked for. But for all of the smart ones out there, you go ahead and show me how to survive on less than $800 a month. Take care and keep asking, but I am sure you won't get one correct or satisfying answer. MsB.

I don't think we are as wealthy as some would have us believe! We have, and have always had a huge deficite! I think that financially, we are overextending ourselves! We can barely take care of OUR poor! This is probably, in part, due to the fact that our own people abuse our system! In an effort to preserve our "reserves" I think that we should be more strict about who qualifies for welfare! I also think that we should try to take care of who is here before we accept more people that we cannot afford! We have always been a country who has opened it's doors to everyone, and helped everyone who has come here!!! Citizen or not! While cheating the very people who were born here! Sorry, I got on a tangent! It's all try to fix one problem, run across another! I wish it was all black and white, but there are HUGE grey areas when trying to fix this country!

I am all for helpng the people that deserve the help. Needing the help and deserving the help are two different things. Most of the people I have know who have had some type of assistance are the people who believe it is owed to them. We live in a country that, for the moment, is able to help its citizens. I am very grateful to be a US citizen, but I think the system needs a wake up call. The people who respect our assistance are the very people who cannot get it, due to the ones who take advantage. Pretty soon we will have exausted our resources and it will be in most part because of the people who take and do not give.

I hope you never lose your job and be unable to find another one. I hope you never get a serious debilitating illness that prevents you from working. Do you have enough savings to live on if either of these calamities happened to you? Most people are only a couple of paychecks away from disaster. And most of the people on welfare are children under 10.
Do you consider yourself a Christian? Christ was all about helping the poor.

one good reason for it is that innocent children of recipients can have a decent life. the system does have some flaws, but human beings do have a responsibility to one another.

there are no good reasons..all i see is people that are on welfare having fifteen pair of tennis shoes name brand of course..and they eat out every day for lunch..or better yet their little foodstamp card allows them to buy sodas and chips...you want some hard core truth...take the ability to buy any type of junk food off those damn cards...see what happens i dont think you would have so many obese people collecting..

Umm, we're not animals. We are human and guess what. We are a compassionate country of wealth and stability that can support the needy. If you want to live in a country that is divided into the very rich and the very poor then move to Saudi Arabia or Uganda.
