i was born in the UK my farther is english my mother was australian but sadly died when i was only 8 (in 2001) i am 16 now and when i am 18 i want to study medicine in australia, i have family in Newcastle just near sydney, but i was thinking of going to ANU or Sydney Uni,
just wondering will i be able to get a citizenship in australia as a permanent resident?

Because your mother was an Australian at the time of your birth, you are eligible for Australian citizenship by descent.
The rules are:
"You are eligible if you were born overseas on or after 26 January 1949 and meet the following requirements:
* one of your natural parents was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth
* you are of good character
* if your parent became an Australian citizen by descent, he or she must have been present in Australia for periods totalling two years at some time in their life."

I'm in a similar position---my parents are North Irish. I believe if you are born to UK parents, in a UK country, you're a UK citizen. So, where do you have citizenship now? I would contact your Australian consulate, if you live outside the UK. Best o' luck to you! |

I think you can. You need to go to the Australian Embasy website I'm sure you can google it. Look at their requirements. You probably just need to prove your mother's heratiage. Good luck! |
