Canadian Passport / Visa question?

My wife and I have been referred someone to become our live-in nanny here in the US. The problem is that this person ( a Canadian citizen )doesn't have a Passport or Visa. I trying to find out the best way to get her into the US legally to live with us for at least 6 months but more like 2 years. Even if the two years has to be broken up fine. Also we would need for her to travel with us out of the country when we want to take the baby with us on vacation. Should she try to get a Canadian Passport or what. I don't want to pay some place like Au Pair in America unnecessary money when I don't have to. What do we do?

Immigration is a long expensive process.
First, she needs a passport.

You could file form I-140 for your prospective employee. She sounds like an EW-3, Other worker. The waiting period for this classification is not short, and before the I-140 would be approved, you'd have to obtain a labor certification from the Labor Dept. certifying that there is a shortage of workers in your area that could do the same work.
The only short-term visa classification available to you is J-1, but you reject the idea of paying an agency to help you with the Exchanger Visitor visa.
As permanent residents, you cannot bring in a Canadian, or any other alien, to work and travel with you unless she has work authorization.
She needs to be in a visa classification that permits her to work in the U.S., and the path to such a classification is long and expensive. |
