Canadian on Student visa F-1 to America, can parents stop me?
|
Hello, I wish to study in America and am willing to fill out all of the paperwork to do so. (Getting the I-20, passport, visa etc.) I even have financial support in the States by a good friend and a real family. But my "parents" wish to control my life forever and are against it.
Apparently there's some alert they can do for the border to prevent me from leaving since I'm under 19? Is this true? Will they see that I'm not a runaway punk kid if I have my student visa? Will I encounter any trouble obtaining such a visa in the first place? Additional Details I've never heard about colleges needing an age of consent form, and so far my age hasn't been an issue with this. This isn't what I'm addressing.

The age that you become an adult in Ontario is 18. This is probably the same for the other provinces. The school that you apply to would require a letter of consent from your parents. If you're of age, then you don't need your parents' consent.
EDIT: You do realize that F-1 visas are also given to students studying in high schools in the US. You didn't say you were planning to go to college. High schools require parental consent.
You can sponsor yourself financially but you still have to prove to USCIS that you can support yourself while there.
And there are scholarships at US colleges for international students. Not many, but they do exist.
Also, if you are under 18, most schools require a parental consent form be submitted to enable you to receive emergency medical treatment, should the need arise. |

if you are 18 and over they cannot do anything
if you are 17 and under then yes they can control your life.
besides you wont qualify for any student visa until you are 18 anyway.
the US immigration dept will NOT issue a student visa to someone who is NOT yet 18 years old.
"I even have financial support in the States by a good friend and a real family."
You are NOT supposed to have any american financial support while you study. You should have your OWN money already saved up so that you can support yourself while you are studying. |
