Construction workers that are working on my house. Is it too late to ask for legal papers after they started?

No, it is not. You may call the police if you suspect they are illegals (it is still a crime to enter this country illegally).

Did you hire them? If so, you should have checked their papers first. If a contractor hired them, then you can talk to him directly, but you can't ask for papers unless the contract you signed says you can. Only the employer of the worker can ask for papers.

You shouldn't ask for their papers yourself, but you can convey to the contractor that you want legal workers working on your home. You should make sure that contractor is licensed and insured.

The contractor should have a business license and insurance.

Most places require a permit from the Building Department. I think that the Building Department requires contractor's business license and insurance.

If there is no permit, you MAY have problems later. If someone gets injured at your home, I believe that you can be sued.

It's never too late. You cannot question workers who aren't working for you, until they begin.

If you don't find out if they're illegal blame yourself when they couldn't read English enough to operate the machinery or install things according to building codes, etc. safely. Then we're talking workman's compensation for Illegals? How about a law suit because they got hurt on your property?

It is only too late after INS gets there because your neighbor called on you and then you pay for it.

Allways ask for legal status and proof BEFORE having work done, and if they can not provide it call INS on them.

You have a right to know if they are legal or criminal illegal aliens. If the latter, they may not be around to correct problems, should they arise, after the project is completed.

You really should have checked this out before hiring them.

For what reason do you need legal papers? If there are papers like that, you have a right to see them.

It's never to late until the INS shows up. Sure, ask for their business license, their contracting license, their worker's comp insurance proof - they get asked for this stuff all the time, so they should bring it the next day. If you mean their green cards, that is a little more strange, but if you have a reason to doubt their status, it is fair to ask at any time. If they are here on a worker permit, they should have it on them in case they do have a run in with the INS - just like we keep our driver's licenses on us. Tell them your lawyer told you you need to get this information from them and see how they respond - they may be insulted, but if they won't produce something or start to demand money and say they won't be back - they are not legal.

i agree with the person who said after they are almost done with your house you then wanna see papers...did you just want to make sure it was done right or in a fast time why you allowed them to start in the first place because you know they work better and quicker then ANY lazy *** american men?? you people are all jokez

Call the contractor on Monday and tell him if he has any subs building your house that hire illegals, he best get them off the job. Advise that you will call ICE unless he complies

No. Ask them or ask. If you're to shy, ask the company they work for. If they're illegal, Hire a legal crew (even check the new crew before they work on your house).

You want your house to be a safe place to live right? That would be bad if the house just randomly collapsed or if pipes got messed up.

The Contractor is a LAWBREAKER ( FEDERAL ) if ILLEGAL ALIENS are working on crews.

No, but why would you want to? If they are illegal, you'll lose the workers. It's REALLY hard to get qualified construction workers who show up every day on time!
