In Mexico, Clinton says U.S. shares blame for drug war

MEXICO CITY – Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton accepted shared responsibility Wednesday for the drug violence convulsing Mexico, saying that traffickers "are motivated by the demand for illegal drugs in the United States and are armed by the transfer of weapons from the United States."

"Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade," she told reporters on the plane. "Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians."

She insisted the fight can be won.

Greasy's labeling of people who are anti-immigration is misleading. I am a legal immigrant but against illegal immigration. My family waited in line and followed the law to get into this great country and so should all people. Most people are for legal immigration but against illegal immigration. To cast both legal and illegal immigrants into the same issue is intentionally misleading and pernicious because of the racist overtones.

Of course America's consumption of drugs is part of the problem but it is also due to Mexico's high level of corruption and it's mishandling of it's economy. Wasn't the primary source of cocaine from columbia before? Why did it move to Mexico?

I don't blame Mexico for it all. It is the old "supply and demand" thing. However I do not agree with the Mexican government that it all the fault of the U.S. for the weapons. I think the Mexican government should enact a martial law and make this a military action (with their own military) and they could get things under control. And as for our inability "to prevent weapons from crossing the border" I think we should close the borders down until this is under control. No one in and no one out. That should limit the weapons from crossing. The Mexican government needs to realize that if they were not supplying the drugs then there would no demand for weapons. They need to stop with the finger pointing and do something about it.

I agree with that. A major reason I say close the darned borders and cut off the supply line! I am no more fond of druggies than I am of illegal alien invaders, who mule the drugs to the US to make that quick buck!

The Mexican government has for years encouraged the drug trade! It's a money maker! Now that the drug dealers and the government have had a falling out Mexico wants to blame the US? Give me a break! Let's try to deal in realities!
The US drug abusers are part of the problem but Mexico has courted the drug producers, etc. for years! They have even used Mexican troops to escort drugs into the US. They did nothing but help Mexican smugglers smuggle drugs into the US! With a few exceptions (when the drug smugglers didn't pay off the government) it was big business in Mexico!

I think Clinton is right. We are part of the trade. One way to stop it is to protect the border. Which should have been done a while ago.

I would still like to see the serial numbers from the guns - I'd bet my next paycheck they came from either the mexican police or military.
