Many US Americans know this. However, unless you are an indigenous people to any of the above, you are illegal. Spain took over several parts of what is now central and south america.

We refer to ourselves as Americans because we are under the impression none of the other Americas say that. They say "MExican," "Salvadorian," "Brazilian," etc.

That is why US Americans refer to ourselves as Americans. I have never heard a brazilian call himself american unless the person is of brazilian decent and is either a legal immigrant or US born.

You may be an American, but you are not an United States citizen. The only way you can do this is to be born in this country of parents who are also citizens or apply legally and go through the process legally.

You can mean what you like when you say it. We aren't trying to belittle anyone, but our country's name: "the United States of America" shortens most conveniently to America. I don't think anyone truly believes we are trying to claim North, Central and South America through referring to ourselves this way. Besides, most of the world refers to us that way.

The usage of "American" to denote a resident of the US is common practice; not only "Americans" do it. Most anywhere in the world people use it in this way. Yes, "technically" it's not accurate, but it's 100% correct nevertheless.

If you don't believe me, consult the dictionary definition:

1. Of or relating to the United States of America or its people, language, or culture.

This is a response, especially for coombs, Uh...let's not forget who the true or shall I say first Americans were and "will always be"--hey, you went there first, just trying to get it straight. That's right, Europeans came over here, slaughtered many, many, "American" Indians and then claimed the land as theirs...I think you know the rest of the story and where I'm going with this. American Indians were the first and "only" American's. Everyone else migrated here, or was brought here involuntarily after being given a promise of "a dream"---

As for everything else, there are humans and then there are humans...and cows too...we have cows :) Hope this helps with the issue.

I am from El Salvador, Central America. When referring to my birth place I call myself a Salvadoran, or someone from Guatemala says Guatemalan, we do not say I am Central American, or for that matter, I am American. It's common knowledge that when someone says I am an American they mean they are from North America.
