The following are facts about persons defined as "poor" by the Census Bureau, taken from various government reports:

* Forty-six percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.
* Seventy-six percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, 30 years ago, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.
* Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.
* The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)
* Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 30 percent own two or more cars.
* Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
* Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.
* Seventy-three percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a third have an automatic dishwasher.

You think just because they live in America and are poor they don't suffer?? Sure they do. We have a lot of poor folks in this country. A lot of people in this country are barely getting by. I know folks who cant afford to go to a doctor or afford to take their medicines.
I don't believe all those reports either.. Yes we are more fortunate then some countries, but we still have poor in our country. Most of the poor I've seen don't own homes they live in projects or something like them..

HA! Check out the infant mortality rates in the US, and see who is in the poorest age group - 0 to 8 yr olds? The US is not perfect.

to luckytobelieve---do you know how many people are homeless in figures? Can you tell how many make below min wage with their great benefits? Do you know how many conflicting statistic there are? Figures tell half the story. I have seen whole areas of slums . I have been to those isolated areas like the A mountains. And you should know that. We have thousand and thousand and yes millions who are poor. Don't act like it is just a few in the whole country.
And yes they do suffer. And in many ways mores than those from other countries.I have seen some walking skeletons here too who look like Africa. Take a walk on the wild side if you dare and spend a week in our slums.

Yes they do suffer. And because they suffer they make poor choices. Having more children than they can support, looking for the government to take care of them or at least supplements their needs and income. It is like a geometric progression. As time goes on more people become dependent on outside help instead of becoming self sufficient. Some have the attitude that the world owes them a living. It does not. Some get out of this rut, but they are in the minority. Sometimes Big Brother fosters a false sense of security.

I think those at/below the poverty line DO suffer as a result of unchecked immigration, but this administration's really shown their 'face of concern' on behalf of those americans who aren't doing so hot, financially....this administration's all about the advancement of Big Business, and damn anyone who gets caught in the wheels of THAT train...

Poor Americans have their suffering. And it is not made any better by having illegal aliens coursing across US borders to make the competition for social/welfare services and jobs more competative.
I have to say that I am sure Poor folks from other parts of the Americans suffer as well. They suffer in much/many different ways and much more severly, I would say.
They suffer from lack of education. The education to know how to insist their government treat them better. They don't realize that to give birth to so many children will obligate them to poverty, starvation and death beyond what would be if they controled their reproductivity. They suffer because of the use and abuse of alcohol in excess and that in turn leads to illness and to physical abuse by men towards women frequently. And They most importantly suffer from the lack of respect of law and order and the rights of others.
Their is much suffering in the Americas, North and South. The degree of suffering is vast but it is different. Those of us in North America do not want the extreme suffering of uneducated, abused and desperate people to cross our border without proper admitance, as to do so will lead the North into the dire and deep poverty of the "other Americas" to the South. Slowly, LEGAL migration will help solve the suffering of the Southern poor. Illegal immigration will sink the North American ship of State and lead to a grinding poverty and mass suffering for all Americans in the end. Nortenos and Surenos both. We will save ourselves and then as quickly as we can, try to help save what we can of others around us, as best we can. It is for the good of majority of all races and peoples, that we insist on legal immigration, less the entire mass of people from all across the Americas, goes down the flusher for lack of control and legality. Chaos will surely lead to suffering for ALL AMericans. We can't allow that to happen any further.

Very much so. More than most imagine. And many ignore them.
If your looking for comparison--many here have it worst. They usually have high crime in the areas they live and are frighten everyday. And many have no heat or electric and food is a daily worry. And no there is no program for them. And no they are not lazy.

I don't think it matters to them or not.Honestly,I don't think illegal immigration affects too many ppl anyway.It's not like the hispanics are taking food out of our mouths or our house away from us.And for all those who claim illegals stole the jobs here in america-----if you really wanted those jobs,the jobs would have already been taken and illegals would'nt have found work here.

Yes, I have cancer, and heart desease, but I can't get help for medical costs because my husband makes about $25,000.00 a Year, and after we pay out about five thousand in taxes, there is not enough to feed our children, much less pay for a spend down program that I would have to go on to get medical care. So, my children eat, and I will be dead within the next two years. We have been living with this ordeal for more than nine years now, since my first heart attack when I was thirty two. I am only forty-one. My husband has been our only support, and because he is an American born Mexican his identification is very valueble to illegals that come to this country. We know it very well, as just this year his id has been stolen three times. All of the ss benefits that he has paid for is gone. Used by an illegal that claimed disability under my husband's name. Believe me the poor in America suffer far more than the people of America are willing to admit. We are forced to live in neighborhoods, where desperate Americans are forced into dealing drugs, or gangs to put food on the table. All the help that was there for the poor Americans is gone, and illegal votes, from these criminals took it away, and gave it to themselves through programs that will help illegals begin businesses, and get their educations paid for. My husband has paid our taxes for our children's education, but I had to pull them out of the dangerous schools here in Texas that are filled with illegals, and seasonal migrant workers children that act like they are still on the streets of Mexico. However, I stopped all of my medication about two years ago so that I could make sure my children still got their education. Why did I have to pay for their education twice? My children are 11th generation Americans. They deserve their education, and so much more. Why should I have to die from lack of medical care because someone who broke the law to enter my country can have free medical care.
My husband will never be able to own any property because when I die all of the medical costs that we couldn't pay for, on the eight heart attacks that I have had, will fall on to him, and they will take his home, his car, or anything else he own. Last year our president passed a bill that states if a person on medicade dies and they have bills owed, they are allowed to take any property owned, or shared with a spouse, as repayment.

I am poor, and I don't care. Only jealous, envious, greedy types give a flip about having money. No one in America is starving.

We have welfare checks, food stamps, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, disability, workman's comp, churches, synagogues, food drives, nonprofit organizations, generous people, day labor, detox and rehab, as well as hundreds of thousands of available unskilled jobs.

If you are starving, it's because you're too lazy to go eat. Or you are here illegally, in which case, go home and get something to eat on your own government's dime. I can't afford to feed the whole world, I am not exactly wealthy myself, and I already pay far too much in taxes to feed people like you who are capable of feeding yourselves.
