that's a bit shortsighted. in the states we need more medical staffers as well as other professionals, as most of the doctors and nurses are foreign born. and because the elderly population have longer life expectancy and would need long term care.

so yes, the answer is we need immigrants. it's just a matter of being able to implement the laws more effectively.

maybe we do while the economy is on such a high but what about when we go into recession. an immigrant workforce isn't something that can be turned on and turned off again. when people move to another country they usually want to do it for good.

There is already a shortage of housing, funds in the NHS and space in our jails. Crime commited by illegal immigrants is soaring and they are beeding the economy dry.
Shut the gates and start the deportations. If only we had a government strong enough!

no we don't there are enough here all ready,
there are British born people living on our streets who could do with help from our government, teenagers who get kicked out of foster care at 16 and end up on the streets, young mums with kids, families who have lost their homes through dept and bankruptcy,
it's a shame that immigrants can't live in their own country for what ever reason but they come to the UK to sponge of the rest of us to get free housing free education free hospital treatment and to live on unemployment benefits and the fact is the British government keep letting more and more people in to the UK without tackling the problems we have here already.
lack of decent low income housing
the national health service
lack of national health dentist's
and the closer of school's in rural areas
the closing of factories and industry which means more British citizen unemployed

No we don't need more immigrants in this country right now - obviously. We have a huge population already and besides that, there are 300 million Chinese immigrants waiting to come here. We need to make sure that the American citizens have their rights included in all of this. What we really need is to get rid of all the illegal saps residing in this country.

I Dont think we need anymore, the town I live in has seen alot more trouble since Immigrants moved here but I dont mind anyone moving here as long as they pay their own way, dont cause trouble and live by our laws and cultures

Whenever i am ill and need an appointment to see my doctor i cant get one within a week an it's because the surgery is full of immigrants, legal or otherwise. It wasn't like this a few years ago.

I think I will go and live in another country, then they can have my council house too.

Its ok to have imigrants as long as they know their place, I'm ENGLISH its my native country I HAVE NO RIGHTS but the imigrants can do and act as they please, are laws and culture do not seem to apply to them, and the goverment should put a complete stop and listen to the native population instead of immagant religious leaders.

There aren't enough good jobs to go round as it is. I know enough well trrained skilled people doing crap minimum wage jobs in order to survive.

Those who beleive we "need" immigrants to work in MaccyD's, shops, pubs, building sites etc are invariably well off people with good jobs who have their heads up their backsides when it comes to what is going on in this country. Everyone working in my nearest MaccyD's is a local and none of them want to be there - most have skills and qualifications they can't use as there aren't enough good jobs to go round.

Most employers would much sooner employ an immigrant on Â£4 an hour than give a skilled, trained British person the Â£10 an hour that they are entitled to (plus such ridiculous luxuries as fair treatment at work and decent working conditions).

There is not enough low cost housing to go round and it makes me sick to hear of British families living in B&Bs when immigrants get given council houses and housing association houses.

These people are coming here to screw the system and get what they can out of it.

Tony and his cronies need to start putting the people who are already here FIRST.

Immigration should be restricted to those who can prove they have a skill which is needed here.

Obviously doctors, surgeons etc and people with specialist skills that may be in short supply in the UK and who can prove they have a job to come to and support themselves should be welcome. Penniless Poles and Bulgarians looking for a council house and a bar job are NOT - there are enough hard up Brits looking for those things and being denied them so why should a foreigner be given them?

Let them go somewhere else. Our Government has a duty to its own people not the people of another country!

How many times does this question need to asked and answered before people accept that the answer is yes, we need immigrants.

The fact is that every Capitalist economy relies on a certain number of immigrants each year to provide cheap labour and to do jobs that British people could do but are otherwise too lazy to do because they would rather sponge off the dole and whine about foreigners taking their jobs.

The Economy relies on immigrants to a certain extent. If there were no immigrants your hospitals would be dirtier, there would be less doctors and nurses and other professionals such as lecturers, scientists etc.

Who is going to the the work that the immigrants do?

NO! Immigrants were needed 200 years ago. The United States is now an established country with many types of individuals with different cultures that are already citizens. I fail to see the need for more.

No, Immigrants shouldn't be here. Reasons are simple, the creation of the welfare state allowed the population to refuse low paid jobs as benefits were better paid. Thus many unfilled vacancies began to impact the economy. As many jobs were left unfilled, then immigration was the only answer.

If the welfare state was abolished for all but the very needy, then immagration could not happen as there would be no jobs available. If people are made to work then generally they are healthier, less crime and begin to have more ambition. It beats watching boring day time TV!

Before you comment on this topic, realise that I consider myself working class and I have seen it all for myself!

No we don't want or need anybody from anywhere. There should be a tax on people who have more than one child and a complete ban on any immigrants at all. The country is full up. The West Indians didn't only come to take jobs 'the whites' wouldn't do, but also because they were getting independence and were trying to escape the sinking ship.Just look at the record of those countries that were former British colonies. A disaster, they can't rule themselves.And by the way, WW2 was started because Hitler invaded Poland. Haven't we helped them enough without having them lauded as saviours because a few fought against tyranny.?

Of course we need immigrants here. Half the population is made up of immigrants. If you look back 40 or 50 years ago if the West Indians didn't arrive here then you'd never have had bus conductors or ticket collectors because the English where too flipping lazy or they thought the jobs too menial for them? Obviously the dole was better than working?!

A lot of immigrants come here to make a better life for themselves. Can you imagine not having enough food to feed your family? or buy new clothes when you want to? They is nothing wrong with immigrants coming here they just need to weed out the ones that aren't going to work.

The major problem is this EU business. A totalitarian government that resides over Europe and no one has the power to vote them in or out. Echoes of the early 1940's. To the american readers. You guys may have issues with immigration like us but at least you guys run your own country and it makes a difference who is in power. Over here we can vote in anyone but they still have to do as the EU tells them. Maybe we need the yanks to come over here again like back in the 40's and help us kick some a**e again!
