hi doll,
another change since 911 to try to tighten security. canada had tried to be exempt from the new passport laws and US did extend the deadline for canada a few times to allow enough time for ppl to get their passports.
but now it's LAW, you need a passport to enter/exit and it can take a few months to get your canuck one. not sure about how long it takes on the US side
p.s. just a citizens answer... NOT an expert, always double check the law. |

If you are flying then you will need a passport to enter Canada, US, Mexico, Bermuda and any island in the Caribbean. This took affect in January 2007. If you are travelling by Land or Sea it will not be required until Summer 2008, NOT January 2008. All you will need is a valid Government Issued Photo ID & your birth certificate.
If you have already applied and are waiting for the passport to come back then you will have to keep waiting. They were allowing you to travel with the paperwork saying you applied but that ended on September 22, 2007.
This wasn't something that the US started to do and then the other countries followed, this was something they all reached an agreement on and did together. |

Presently, if you drive into Canada, you can use your birth certificate. However, if you fly there, you need your passport. It should be noted that both of these requirements apply only for reentry into the US, not entry into Canada. |

If you are traveling to Canada by land or by sea you do not require a passport but you must have U.S. citizenship documents such as a certified copy (not a photocopy or facsimile) of a U.S. birth certificate, this must be accompanied by a government issued photo-ID such as a drivers license or military ID etc to gain re-entry back into the States.
If you are traveling by air then you will need a passport, no exceptions.
However from summer next year all persons traveling to Mexico, Canada, Bermuda and the Caribbean region will require a passport regardless of how they enter the country. |

Starting Jan 31, you will need a passport.
If you do not have a passport, but have applied - and just have not gotten it back. You can bring proof you applied (paid fee) plus birth certificate and drivers license.
Those are the rules to get BACK into the US, to get in to visit Canada - you are probably ok with your DL, just plan on staying. |

Yes, we can use birth certificate and valid i.d. to enter Canada but its good to have International Passport when we are entering other countries not only to Canada. By having the International Passport, we are covered/protected under Immigration International Law. In other words, we would not feel the fear to travel to any other countries in the world.
I should say that we need a passport not only to enter Canada but to any other countries in the world. |

always bring your passport with you whenever you leave the country. canada may be an exception if your only going for a day or so.
you just have to keep in mind that a passport is the only type of acceptable identification in other country's, and if theres ever a emergency situation a passport is necessary.
i would suggest bringing a passport. |
