Do you have to be a greencard holder for five years to marry an american?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do you have to be a greencard holder for five years to marry an american?

i was born in germany, but we moved to the US when i was four. so i've lived in the united states for 14 1/2 years. we had the visa for 13 of those years. we finally got our greencard through my dad's new company.

well i am planning on marrying my boyfriend because we kinda had an oops and i'm prego.(thats not the only reason i'm marrying him, bit that's the reason for the rush) well now people are telling us we can't get married until i've had my greencard for five years? if anyone has any type of information that can help me or assiste me in any way it would greatly be appreciated.

(i tried calling the immigration center but i'm always stuck on hold for so long and never get any answers. today i was on hold for an hour)
Additional Details
i've had my greencard for only a year

No. YOu can marry an American and get a green card afterwards, if you want.

You can't become a CITIZEN until you've had your green card 5 years, or 3 if you got it through marriage (which is how people often get it.)

You can marry whoever you want whenever you want. But if you decide to apply for citizenship, that's when you need at least 3 years of permanent residency as the spouse of a U.S. citizen or just 5 years of permanent residency. Your "people" are all confused.

What you heard is not true. You can get married to him any time you want to. However, you have to wait 4 more years to be eligible to apply for US Citizenship.

You can marry an American without having a green card first. I (american citizen) married my husband (UK citizen) when he came over for a visit. We later adjusted his status and he has had his green card for 2 1/2 yrs now. I know when he has had it for 3 yrs he can apply and take the citizenship test. Which he plans on doing, but also not giving up his British citizenship. Yes dual citizenship is possible. Just refuse to renounce your other citizenship.

You can be completely illegal in the US and marry an American citizen. if you doubt it, scroll through all the questions here and see how many people ask about that. Since you already have a green card, you're free to marry whomever you like and live here forever. Your marriage won't affect that one way or the other.

No, you don't have to wait, but you will probably have to file more paperwork.

Next time stay on the line. Put the thing on speaker phone and read a book.
