...if you find a cheaper flight a few days before or after? I don't want to break that law, but I didn't know if that was acceptable.

I went to get my passport the other day, and it asked when I was leaving, and length of stay. I took a good estimate of when I intended to go, but really hope I can book a flight for the best price if it is a day or two off.

Not necessary. The date you mention in the passport application is only a tentative date and month. Whereas if you have a visa expiring on a particular date, then you will have to travel within that date, else, the Visa will be cancelled. Passport will remain valid till the date it was issued for, say for 5 years or for 10 years.
You may delay your departure to any date due to any number of reasons, but have to leave within the date of the Visa validation. |

You can leave before if you're talking about a tourist visa, and (assuming you're talking about the United States) you'll receive an i-20 upon entry, the date of your departure is listed on there, but if you do not leave by that date, you can be considered an overstay, which can in some cases trigger a ban of i believe 3 years. |

you must be asking about a visa application...because a passport application is not used for the function you are asking about...or a least a U.S. passport application isn't. |

There is no connection for the dates.
Passport offices ask, in case some applications are urgent..and to offer fast track service.
But also out of interest/statistics reasons (to see how long/where people travel the 1st time).
however you don't say which country you are from.
Some countries (eg china, in the past - not sure now) have demanded that to have a pasport, you need to also show a reason why you needed it.
Your first journey must therefore be to that destination (no time limit... but to that place), and if not.. you would be turned back at the airport when trying to leave !
This used to cause businesses and their employee's problems if they were applying when th eneed was for overseas training or business meetings that were later cancelled or changed, then the next needed trip was to another country (!).
