The problem is that the legalization elements have been all entwined in the guest worker program which is a really bad program. One Senator ran projections of how many poor immigrants would come here under the program (on TOP of the current rate of immigration and on TOP of the current illegal immigrants) and he came up with 185 million to 217 million poor immigrants in the next 20 years. Even California Senators Boxer and Feinstein who have been pushing for legalization as their main goal in the program voted against this element of the program. (They lost.)
Can your school and neighborhood fit and support that many poor immigrants? Mine can't. Do you see that many jobs around? I don't. This is a big business idea to keep wages depressed for unskilled and semi skilled labor into the indefinite future.
If the border is truly secured, I want to deport felons and want illegal immigrants to actively start learning English as a condition of legalization. However, as you say, they are already here. The problem is that if you say you want legalization people now say 'I want the guest worker program' and most of them don't have a clue what is in it.
If there is a way to frame the bill during conference into qualified illegal legalization plus MAJOR border security, I would be in favor of it. To tell the truth, though, I'd rather have no bill at all than the Senate Bill in its current form. |

If the illegals are given amnesty, a lot of American will no longer feel they can trust in the rule of law. And that can have potentially devastating social consequences. |

But if the present illegals were given amnesty, there would be a sudden flood of new illegals; much more than we currently have. The effects would be massive, in proportion to the new numbers of illegals coming in.
The country could not handle this. The emergency services, medical services, educational services, food services, and others would break down under the burden of trying to serve millions of people who do not have the concept of waiting their turn and obeying the rules.
If the illegals do succeed in their invasion of America (and it IS an invasion, just like the German Panzerblitz that began WWII) they will be sawing off the tree branch that they are trying to sit on. The standard of living will diminsh until it is no better than that of Mexico today. The economy and salaries will diminish until they are no better than those in Mexico today. Why should Americans work to support selfish foreigners who only want to come in and take and consume and not give or produce?
That is not civilized behavior, to want to take and enjoy what others have worked for. That is making slaves out of those who did work to produce those things.
We are done with slavery in America. It is not going to happen again. The brave people who live here and have worked for what we have here, of all colors and nationalities, will not allow people of any nation or color to take it away from us. We will not allow the democratic process to be subverted to the ruin of the land. Better that America should cease to be, than to give it to conquerors, whether politically correct or incorrect.
The brave and hard working former Americans can make a new nation that will once more lead the world in its science, engineering, culture, finance and integrity. The former America can be left to the would-be usurpers.
They will starve when they run out of the accumulated reserves built up by honest, hard working people; or live a miserable subsistence lifestyle, because they do not know how to produce anything and are not willing to work to produce anything. They are only looking for a handout.
They are like little children who scream when they are denied anything, and think that the adults will give in because they scream so loud, and that they adults will do anything for peace and quiet. They are mistaken. |

That is true, but it is still illegal for them to be here. There is no getting around that. Amnesty is rewarding these people for breaking the law. I wonder if I came in your house and stole something of value would you want me to get amnesty. |

If they get amnesty and become American citizens, then they will STOP doing jobs "Americans won't do" because THEN they will demand better wages.
And THEN the employers who illegally hire illegals will just keep on hiring illegals.
Are our politicians just TOO INCREDIBLY STUPID to understand that? |

It is true that they are already here but by legitimizing their illegal activities, we are only going to encourage more of the same.
The border patrol has seen a huge spike in the number of people crossing the border since the possibility of amnesty was brought up. Imagine how huge the influx will be when it is passed into law.
It will also show that the United States has a weak policy on illegal immigration and if you can just get here and wait for 10-15 years, you will get to be a citizen.
Giving amnesty to every new wave of immigrants is like drawing a line on the ground and saying "Don't cross this line!" When they do, you draw another line further back and say "OK! Don't cross THIS line." When they cross that one, what do you do? Draw another line! Eventually, you will run out of space to draw lines and then what? You have given away everything you had. |

Sure and look what it does....
Arizona is the temporary home of 500,000 illegal aliens. They cost Arizona taxpayers over $1 billion annually in services for schools, medical care, welfare anchor babies, loss of tax base and prisons. Illegals use those vehicles for smuggling more people and drugs from around the world into our country. When the vehicles are recovered, they are smashed-up wrecks in the desert. If not found, they have new owners south of the border as thieves drive the cars through the desert and into Mexico as easily as you drive your kids to soccer practice.
Illegal aliens displaced American workers at a cost in excess of $133 billion dollars last year according to Harvard Professor George Borjas. American citizens: College and high school kids cannot find a summer job in yard care, landscape, fast food or service jobs. Why? Illegal aliens work them at a third the wage and often, under the table.
Not only do young American not have jobs; their parents are paying taxes for illegal aliens who are not paying taxes.
Annually, 75 percent of drugs arrive from Mexico at a net cost of $120 billion hard currency that leaves our country for good. In addition, our tax dollars pay $80 billion for the War on Drugs each year. It is a war that hasn’t been won in the past 30 years and drugs are as available today to your teenager as they were in 1970.
When an alien criminal gets caught for rape, murder or drug distribution, you pay $1.6 billion annually in prison costs to house, feed and clothe those filling 30 percent of our federal and state prisons—not to mention TV, movies, weight rooms and other entertainment—they enjoy while being incarcerated.
Over 300,000 women annually arrive pregnant and drop them on U.S. soil. The American taxpayer pays for food, housing, medical and schooling for them to age 18 PLUS their mother. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, average annual cost per child K-12 is $7,161.00 and exceeds $109 billion annually per cycle of anchor babies.
The average head of household illegal alien costs you $2,700.00 in welfare money over and above any taxes he or she pays in their meager paying jobs. With 15 to 20 million illegal aliens in the USA, that figures exceeds $20 billion of your tax dollars. (Source: Center for Immigration Studies, August 2004)
How about the $56 billion in pure cash illegal migrants sent to their home countries last year and every year? That’s after their kids enjoyed free education, free lunches and free medical care paid for by you.
Mexico receives $15 billion annually from its worker drones. No wonder Vicente Fox sent us 9.2 million illegal alien Mexicans so far.
The lifetime net fiscal drain—taxes paid minus services used—for an adult immigrant is $55,200.00 according to Carrying Capacity Network.
With a minimum of 15 million illegal aliens in our country, these figures are the tip of the iceberg. Average bilingual education is $1,200.00 per illegal alien student. Get this! We educate 1.1 million illegal alien children each year. The American public has paid $27 billion to provide forms, ballots, interpreters and brochures for languages other than English in 2003.
An estimated one-third to one-half illegal aliens work off the books. It costs $200 million to provide for emergency health care for illegal aliens in the Border States annually. California with over three million illegals paid $79 million, and four of their major LA hospitals bankrupted and shut their doors in 2004. Texas with 1.5 million illegal aliens paid $74 million in hospital care. Georgia ran a $63 million deficit for 64,000 unpaid doctor visits to their Grady Health Care system in 2002. Georgia taxpayers paid $27 million for 11,188 anchor baby hospital births. Georgia taxpayers paid a whopping $242 million for educating illegal alien kids in 2003.
What are the consequences? One in two adult African-Americans in New York is unemployed. African-American children’s poverty grew by 50 percent since 1999. Why? Their dads can’t find work.
It costs the taxpayer, $68 billion a year to pay for the resettlement of legal immigrants.
Only 22 companies in 2003 were taken to court for hiring illegal aliens. None went to jail. However, it’s a $10,000.00 fine per illegal alien hired and up to five years in prison. You would think that would deter corporations. Not when they’ve bought off enforcement!
Who else figures in this grand scheme? Your governors and mayors who provide sanctuary laws for illegal aliens! Mayor Bloomberg of New York City, Governor Baldacci of Maine! Governor Bill Owens of Colorado! Mayor Hickenlooper of Denver! Mayor of Los Angeles! The Mayor of San Francisco! The Mayor of Chicago! The Mayor of Miami! How do we know? All those cities and dozens more give sanctuary to illegal aliens with Special Order 40.
Illegals remain in our country with exemption from arrest—yet, they are federal criminals!
A national consensus on immigration is clear from the wide range of polls on the issue over the past several years: By overwhelming margins, Americans want to cut back drastically on immigration—not bring in new immigrants or legalize those who are already here illegally.
Limiting immigration has the overwhelming support of most Americans, regardless of party affiliation or race.
• 65% of voters favor stopping all immigration into the U.S. during the war on terrorism.
• 92% of voters favor “imposing stricter immigration and border crossing polices.”
• 84% of Americans support tighter restrictions on immigration.
• 77% think the government is not doing enough “to control the border and to screen people allowed into the country.”
• 85% strongly/somewhat agree “that enforcement of immigration laws and the border has been too lax and has made it easier for the terrorists to enter.”
• 72% think that “a dramatic increase in resources devoted to border control and enforcement of immigration laws would help reduce the chances of future terrorist attacks.”
• Six in ten Americans support reducing legal immigration levels.
• 77% of respondents in a CNN poll opposed granting amnesty to illegal immigrants.
• 53% of Americans said the number of legal immigrants allowed into the U.S. should be decreased. Only 6% wanted to see it increased.
• 41% of Republicans and 45% of Democrats support stopping legal immigration altogether.
• 72% of Americans think immigration should be reduced,
• A Roper poll in January found that 83% of Americans favor a lower immigration level. 70% favor restricting immigration to less than 300,000 new immigrants a year (including 70% of Republicans, 73% of African-Americans, and 52% of Hispanics). Most want even larger cuts: 54% favor an immigration level of below 100,000 a year. 20% support no immigration at all.
The same Roper poll found that a large majority (75%) supports strong laws to identify and deport illegal immigrants. Only 10% disagree with strict laws against the removal of illegal immigrants. The strongest supporters of tough measures against illegal immigrants are self-styled political moderates (78%), strongly religious (76%), whites (77%), Protestants (82%), and Midwesterners (85%). 76% of Democrats, 76% of Republicans, 78% of self-described middle-of-the-roaders, and 60% of Hispanics (English-speaking) also support tough laws against illegal immigrants.
• 52% of all Americans favor a five-year ban on all legal and illegal immigration to the U.S., including 54% of all Republicans and 48% of all Democrats.
• 50% favor a law that would stop all legal immigration into the U.S. for the next five years.
• 63% of Americans think immigration levels are too high, including 66% of Republicans and 60% of Democrats.
• 62% of Americans think immigration levels should be decreased, 27% think the present levels should remain, and 12% say they should be increased.
Some lawmakers are particularly concerned with the attitudes of Hispanics on the immigration issue. Polls show that Hispanic Americans, like all Americans, support cutbacks in immigration.
• 89% of Hispanic Americans strongly support an immediate moratorium on immigration. 74% feel fewer immigrants should be allowed and stronger restrictions should be enforced.
• Hispanics favor reducing immigration by a margin of 53% to 35% in Texas, 48% to 40% in New York, and 47% to 39% in Florida. Rudolfo de la Garza, a University of Texas at Austin professor and one of the directors of the study, said: “U.S born Mexican-Americans believe that they suffer a lower quality of services because of the excess demand on them generated by the immigrants.”
• 43% of Hispanics nationwide think the government is not doing enough to stop illegal immigration. The more established Hispanics are in the United States, the more likely they are to think the government is not doing enough to curb illegal immigration. 37% of foreign-born Hispanics believe not enough is being done; that belief increases to 45% of first-generation Hispanics and half of second-generation Hispanics. |

I'm going to concentrate on illegal Mexicans because they are the largest illegal group, and have unique advantages other illegals don't have.
Amnesty would set a precedent for the inevitable influx of illegal in the future. At some point the USA will slack off on border enforcement, and the illegals will flood in as they have. They will argue that the USA is obligated to give them residency and citizenship because the USA did not keep them out. As each group of illegals get these rights, their voting power and sheer power in numbers increases.
I assert that they USA is not in any way obligated to legalize these people who have entered the USA illegally. That's like arguing that a shop is obligated to let you have a stolen item because you were able to sneak it out of the store without paying.
Also, the illegals tend to concentrate in the American southwest. There are already dramatic changes in the cultures and quality of life in some areas because of the massive numbers of illegals aliens. |

I think it would improve their quality of life if they were paid an honest wage. It wouldn't hurt me in anyway that I can see. The only downside I can see is that all the racist rednecks in this country would have to quit blaming everything on the ILLEGALS, and find a new scapegoat for all their b*tching. And who knows, maybe those ignorant *ssholes would come after me next. |

Every person for illegal immigration needs to compensate these innocent people who have had their social security numbers and identities stolen by these illegals who invade our country with no care who they hurt. They should have to not only compensate the money lost from their social security accounts after they are zeroed out once the fraud is detected, but every last cent the victims had to pay taking time off work, every cent that went into photocopying documentation, every cent that went towards lawyers and gas driving somewhere to get this mess taken care of, and any other financial expenditure the victim had to cough up. They should also be forced to compensate the victims for the emotional hardships endured. They should have to compensate for the money and time spent trying to straighten out their credit ratings after these illegals have ruined them. They should be forced to compensate these victims for every single hardship related to what these illegals have inflicted upon these people. Currently, the system does not provide any compensation at all and a lot of people are never restored to previctimization status. Oh but these pro-illegals claim that illegal immigration is a victimless crime that hurts no one and that we are whining when we complain.
You think these illegals care that they are hurting innocent lives? Their loyalty is to Mexico. They proved that during one of the first rallies when they took down the American flag, hung up the Mexican flag, and then hung the American flag upside down underneath it. THAT is how they feel about America.
http://michellemalkin.com/archives/004869.htm
Then the people who want to appease them pull out the excuses about how people who are not even alive now, and haven't been for hundreds of years, 'stole' the land from the American Indians. Even American politicians are carrying out this traitorous attack on our sovereignty! If this keeps up, the United States of America will become a 3rd world country, just like Mexico! Mexico's problems are not the fault of Americans, but they are becoming our problems because the Mexicans are invading us and bringing their problems with them.
The illegals make up about 5 % of the work force. The unemployment rate is about 4.5%. Keep in mind that the unemployment rate does NOT represent everyone who is unemployed. It only counts those who are collecting unemployment. Everyone else's plight is ignored. The unemployment rate if everyone was counted would be tremendous. We do NOT have a shortage of labor, we have a large surplus. The more illegals that come in and take our jobs at minimum wage or less (often less) puts more and more Americans out of a job. Most of these Americans are never counted in the unemployment rate if they do not manage to get unemployment benefits. Unemployment benefits are hard to receive.
Illegals draw welfare by stealing people's social security numbers and identities. That means there are a lot of people being directly hurt by these people as well. Innocent people are having their credit ratings ruined, having IRS problems, and social security problems. If someone who has had their social security number stolen gets married, if either spouse dies or become disabled then they can be denied their benefits.
My family moved to the US before WWII. Those of my family that didn't make it over got killed by the death camps. Our family assimilated to the American culture. We didn't expect the Americans to change to suit us. The illegal immigrants from Mexico are not civilized like that.
They not only changed the National Anthem to Spanish, they changed the words. They already burn our flag and hang our flag upside down. They waved the Mexican flag during a lot of their protests. Some schools have stopped hanging the American flag and forbidden students from wearing clothes with any part of the American flag on their clothing all to keep from offending the Mexicans. It's nothing short of an attack of our country, not only by the illegal aliens, but those who seek to appease them.
I am tired of the stereotype that Americans wouldn't do the work that illegals do. Illegals do all kinds of jobs for less than minimum wage which drives the wages down for U.S. citizens. Construction jobs are an example. There are lots of illegals doing construction jobs that Americans used to do because the companies can keep more of the profits if they pay less for the workers. All that does is make companies wealthier and Americans poorer. Illegals are stealing jobs that Americans have done for years.
"Mexico is waging war on the U.S. through mass immigration illegal and legal, through the assertion of Mexican national claims over the U.S., and through the subversion of its laws and sovereignty, all having the common end of bringing the southwestern part of the U.S. under the control of the expanding Mexican nation, and of increasing Mexico’s political and cultural influence over the U.S. as a whole.
Cultural imperialism
We experience Mexico’s assault on our country incrementally—as a series of mini-crises, each of which calls forth ever-renewed debates and perhaps some tiny change of policy. Because it has been with us so long and has become part of the cultural and political air we breathe, it is hard for us to see the deep logic behind our “immigration problem.” Focused as we are on border incursions, border enforcement, illegal alien crime, guest worker proposals, changes of government in Mexico City, and other such transient problems and events—all of them framed by the media’s obfuscation of whether or not illegal immigration’s costs outweigh its benefits and by the maudlin script of “immigrant rights”—we don’t get the Big Picture: that the Mexican government is promoting and carrying out an attack on the United States.
Another reason we miss what’s happening is that our focus is on the immigrants as individuals. Thus our leaders talk about illegal immigrants as “good dads,” “hard working folks” seeking to better their lives and their family’s prospects. In fact, this is not about individual immigrants and their families, legal or illegal. It is about a great national migration, a nation of people moving into our nation’s land, in order to reproduce on it their own nation and people and push ours aside.
Thus, in orchestrating this war on America, the Mexican state is representing the desires of the Mexican people as a whole.
What are these desires?
(1) Political revanchism—to regain control of the territories Mexico lost to the U.S. in 1848, thus avenging themselves for the humiliations they feel they have suffered at our hands for the last century and a half;
(2) Cultural imperialism—to expand the Mexican culture and the Spanish language into North America; and especially
(3) Economic parasitism—to maintain and increase the flow of billions of dollars that Mexicans in the U.S. send back to their relatives at home every year, a major factor keeping the chronically troubled Mexican economy afloat and the corrupt Mexican political system cocooned in its status quo. "

Illegal immigration is a major issue right now and isn't going away for awhile. I think that things would change but not necessarily for the worse. Americans and those that are here legally could just as well be trained for any jobs that they are doing now. Our prisons are full of illegal immigrants who have committed crime, so the crime rate would go down. The economic pressures that they put on us would decrease. |

i think it's just awful that they are ALREADY fining people before there is even anything going on in the court systems...what is your view.? their was a story on today about a drywall guy that got fined loads of $ cause he had undocumented workers working for him, like 27 or so and they are 'being sent back' and one was being held on a gun something or other...it's crap..they are just going to be turning people in...left and right if this keeps going...and again, a distraction for bush and his cronies to present so that we minimize talking about war...this story happened in oceanside ca. my feelings, it irks me. leave them alone...leave the employer alone...we've been living this way for years..and really, who is it really hurting?! anyone who says, yeah, it hurts us...prove it! i don't think so...show me statistics! the statistics are in the number of families who suffer from deaths of the war...or deaths of the car chases of loaded 'immigrants'..that does not mean criminal! what is criminal is the war! and the 132,000 troops families and friends who are over serving in the war...that far far far out numbers the amount of people who are here, trying to make it for their future generations.. |

Well, they can be sent back. If they break the law - any law - they can be deported, so even it's a slow process, there's hope.
It's like someone said once - if they were coming here and trying to integrate cultures, it'd be one thing. But they're coming over here to conquer the American culture. Trust me, I live in Tampa. I don't have grocery stores anymore, I have bodegas. I ask a stock clerk where something is, I get "Que? No habla English." Nice.
Oh, I guess you're right. I am feeling the effects. I'm just about ready to stop, that's all. |

Why don't we just give all the criminals a break too? Isn't that we should be doing since amnesty would condone an illegal act? Let's all create a bunch laws and then not enforce them when they're broken. You say that we are currently feeling those effects, so I interpret that as you don't think illegal immigrants hurt American economy. ARE YOU KIDDING? You think Mexico would like it if a bunch of Americans moved in and tried to change the way things are run? I don't think so, so why should America have to? I have no problem with immigrants who are here legally. Matter of fact, one of my friends is a LEGAL immigrant. Even she disagrees with illegal immigration. She worked hard to play by the rules and amnesty toward illegal immigrants belittles the efforts she put forth do it the right way. I think that as much as Mexican citizens hate Americans degrading them, they would feel the same way if the shoe were on the other foot. Now chew on that for a little while. |
