Should be based on the legal status of your parents. Simply being born on American soil should not be the only criterion.

If I may quote the US Constitution:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

So I would have to state that, being a defender of the US Constitution, US citizenship should be based on being born here.

Legal status of the parents, only! The anchor baby law is outdated and should be stricken from the books asap. At least one parent of a child born in the USA should be an American citizen in order for the child to be able to also receive US citizenship. Otherwise, the child should only have the citizenship of the country that the parents are from. The countries will recognize that child as a citizen of their country because of the parents, so don't listen to those who say the children will be "without a country." That is hogwash!

the common term is anchor babies. immigrants from all countries
have them, the parents maybe here on a student visa or a work visa, just because the child is born here is not the child's fault and
may not have been the intention of the parents. that is what needs to be written into the law... the intent. if the immigrant came here to give birth just so the child would be a legal citizen, then they should not be given that status and not be entitled to the benefits except to make sure the child was stable enough
to be returned to it's mothers place of origin, unless the proud parents apply for legal status within the u.s. . and the re-occurring theme about what our ancestors did and what happened 100-250+ years ago is such a moot point. if they lived in the same times as we do now they would be screaming at the tops of their collective lungs for something to be done and now.

How about we go all the way back to my great,great grandparents,the ones who fought to have freedoms,the ones who built this country,who fought wars to have freedoms,the ones that Americans will not forget,and we will not give up our country.We have givin alot and anyone who says we havent,can give us back the food they are eating tonight and go back to where they come from.To be American is not just to be born here.

Since there is so much deliberate abuse of the law as far as illegal Mexicans are concerned, the law should be changed so that any child born here should automatically have the citizenship of its mother. Far too many come here just to take advantage of our system with the intent to cheat it. Changing the law would stop this abuse.

its always been if you are born here you are american with some exceptions but its most likely gonna stay that way. And whoever stated that all the babies are gonna eat our food, you're pretty selfish and narrowminded.

I think we need to let go of all this hate. If each person just concentrated on their own personal problems they wouldn't have so much time to spend hating on everyone else. This country is made up of immigrants. White people came over here and took the land away from the Indians. Did they really honestly think it was never going to happen to them? They were oppressed in GB and they came to the US and oppressed the Indians. Mexicans are oppressed in their country and all they want to do is work. My goodness people, what is so wrong with that? You would be singing a different toon if you were the child of a Mexican born here.
