I think in 4th grade, they can. The point is that those of us born here have taken years of our history. We may have forgotten more than most immigrants will ever learn, including some questions on the test, but if you want to be a citizen here you should damned well want to learn the history of the country you are becoming a part of.
However, I always passed every practice exam I've taken. |

I hope so -- I know I could -- I suspect the answer is no since I recently watched the TV show Are you smarter than a 5th grader? and was appalled by the lack of knowledge exhibited.
I went to the site recommended by Joe U and happy to say I was right -- I could pass it. |

A first grader could answers these questions. |

most of them don't even know the president , the vice president name. if you ask them who is Condolezza rice they will say " what kind of rice is it" Most of them still think Bill Clinton is the president. |

what does it matter we are American born,we did not come across a border,or ocean,and if we,some,or all can not pass such a test,you can hang that problem on the neck of democrats/liberals for the mess the public education is in,thanks to teddy kennedy,and all other democrats/liberals who are responsible for writing most education bills! |

I don't think that allot of the people couldn't; because they are not taught like they were years ago. When I was in school we were taught about the Constitution and the different branches of the government. Now days the teachers don't even know the subject that they are teaching in most cases. One of my teachers was a biologist and he could answer just about any question you could ask him. Now days a teacher in geography is more than likely not be able to point out a certain state on the map. If you listen to Jay Leno on the Tonight Show some of the teachers can't answer some of the questions that we were asked when I was in school. |

No since Bush's No child left behind law requires children to pass only in the subjects of Math, Reading Comprehension, and Writing/ Vocabulary. I read the EOG'S and there are 5 different tests in each grade and and only a fifth of the class will receive the same exam. The teachers are to focus more on the requirements of the EOG's than to each other subjects. Many of the teachers salaries are dependant on how well their students do on the exams. I do not beleive that many people would. I probably would because History of any type was my favorite subject - the subjects I took in college were World History Archeology and Anthropology and then the required courses. Those that are my age 38 or older would probably not remember every thing on that test. I sent a copy to my neice at Indiana Univ. who is studying business and economics and she missed way too many. The test it's self is a bit out dated and more people keep up on the events of the last 10 years more than the history of the US for the past 200. |

With the state that schools are in these days I say most won't. My friend (U.S. born), who lives in Tucson, recently moved back to the U.S. after having lived in Mexico since she was 9 yrs old. She took a test to become a teacher's aid and was afraid that she wouldn't pass because most of the people taking the test (citizens) had already failed it several times. SHE PASSED ON THE FIRST TRY!!!! Then she studied, on her own, and took/passed all the tests for her GED in one week! Could this be a tribute to Mexican schools? Another factor, in my opinion is that a lot of people no longer have any pride in this, the most bountiful, wonderful country in the world (20 million illegal aliens can't all be wrong) and don't even bother to study this country's history in depth. Yes, there have been atrocities and only God can answer why he let those things happen, but don't forget that this is the most excellent place to be; take the time to find out why.. |
