Do you think people born in America deserve a better life than people born in Mexico?
|
Why should the quality of life for the same work be higher in the USA than in Mexico? And given that it will be, why is it fair to tell people that they just can't have that because they were born in Mexico? Is it right that someone on welfare in America can afford more luxuries than a hard-worker in Mexico? If someone from Mexico is willing to leave his life behind and work hard in America for low pay, should he have the chance, instead of being forced to choose between immigrating illegally, and staying home and living in poverty? Additional Details What I'm really getting at here is the question of whether there should be more slots for legal immigration, so that more people can come in through the legal procedures.

I think if someone decides to come to the US for a better life then they should just do it. I dont care if its legally or illegally. The truth is the borders are man made and the law is man made to keep people apart. I dont see anything morally wrong with crossing the border if when you get here you work hard and earn your bread. I will do whatever it takes to feed my family as long as its morally excepted I live me life by the law of god not the law on man. At the end of the day god is the one watching me not some idiot who thinks he is doign right by keeping people suffering or making them suffer more because of selfish reason. America has a lot to give and if people can come for jobs then they should. Now anyone who is coming to leach off the government I dont agree with and that can be a legal or illegal american. |

It has nothing to do with 'deserving a better life'. There are over 200 countries poorer than mexico and if we take in 20 million from each this country will be worse than bangladesh. If you are so concerned with mexican poverty perhaps you should join the peace corps and go work down there. It is only a matter of time before the US is poorer than mexico. |

They do not deserve a better life, everyone deservs a better life.
People who were born in america do deserve first crack at american jobs though! If an american comapny is hiring, they should hire americans, or move to Mexico and hire Mexicans.
And yes, it takes some time, but go through the legal cannels to become an american citizen and then you don't have to deal with things like this. |

Mexico has suffered from crappy leader after crappy leader for too long. The rich are unwilling to share with the poor, give them decent jobs, and pay them decent wages. Mexico is a beautiful place with a beautiful people and culture. This is Mexico's biggest resource. Mexico also has lots of natural resources such as oil and silver. There is no reason for the people in Mexico to suffer as they do. They need a leader who really cares about them. Americans do too at this point.
I see nothing wrong with people being able to come over if they do so legally, but there are many countries were conditions aren't that good and so the people would rather try their luck here. If Mexicans can come over easily, Nigerians, Koreans, Indians, Hatians, etc. should be able to as well, but there still should be more effort on the part of these countries to take care of their people so they won't feel the need to leave. How can these countries ever grow and become strong if people keep leaving them? |

I think people deserve to give their children the things they built, and in the case of American citizens, that is America. In the case of Mexican citizens, that is Mexico.
Those from Dafur would be grateful for either.

Refugees are different than economic immigrants. Economic immigrants just want 'more'. |

We don't deserve it we have earned it. It is unfortunate that the Mexicans don't rise up and take control of their government but if they did it would probably be just as corrupt as the current one. |

People everywhere deserve a better life or living conditions not necessarily from America or Mexico. Without recourse to race or continent, people should enjoy the resources of our world. However, people who want to immigrate to other lands must follow due process in doing so else our world will be turned into a chaotic place. We need valid papers to cross borders and make legitimate living. Any outside this, is looking for trouble and daring the lion in his den. |

its is sad that not everyone has the advantages that people in other countries have, but it is a fact of life.
here is a question for you. why are you not asking the Mexican goverment the same question. People who are from poorer countries illegally immigrate there and do you think they are opening their arms for them. the answer is no. Is it those people's fault they were born in a country poorer than mexico. Here are some facts about how mexico treats illegals in their country.
For instance, Article 33 states that foreigners may be deported without any
legal recourse:
According to a fact sheet distributed by Hollingsworth's office, "Mexico routinely fills 10 or 12 buses a day with undocumented Central Americans," deporting 240,000 last year alone. It claims Mexico has legalized only 15,000 migrants in the past five years.
Mexicans are also legally given priority over foreigners for employment.
You see even mexico understands that taking in too many people is a bad thing and that it has adverse effects on the eccomony.
Here is an anology. A ship sinks and only one lifeboat is saved. it holds 10 people but there are over 300 people in the water. if everyone gets on board the lifeboat will sink leaving everyone to drowned.
We have an legal way to enter so we can track the amount of people that come in here and control all of this so the lifeboat doesnt sink.
They are not fleeing a dictator who is killing them. They have water food so there is nothing that makes it so neccesary that they have to break the law to enter. Some of them pay a coyote more than what it cost to come here legally. They just dont believe the law pertains to them. |

US Citizens First

Yes they do.
Both countries supposedly have a Democratic Government, the people in both countries have the Right to change that Government through elections or rebellion, it is in the Constitutions of both countries that the Governments rule with the consent of the people.
If the people in Mexico are unwilling to change the situation and would rather run away then they deserve no respect or sympathy. Their part of this continent was settled first by Europeans and they have had longer to make it work, they have never succeeded, that is not our problem.
Perhaps if they gave up siesta, they might accomplish more and not need to cry that life isn't fair. That is their country, this is ours, we had a rebellion to form ours and have created something good, they have had their rebellions, and left Spain like we left England, if they wasted their opportunity and created a horrible place to live, why would anyone want them to come here and destroy what we have built.
Their supporters claim they work harder than us and we are lazy. Who built a country that others will break the law to get into, and who ruined a country that they now will break the law to get out of?
NO Sympathy. NO Amnesty. They made their bed, let them now enjoy their siesta in it. |

Yes. Once we get the illegals out we can have more slots as you call them, you see they are ruining it for honest people who want to come here legally. |

As the first poster said, there are many countries much poorer than Mexico.
Why are you only talking about Mexico here?? It is unfair to give Mexico more "slots" than other countries.
Deport all the illegals and THEN we can talk about immigration reform or increasing "slots" from ALL countries.
BTW, in case you didn't know, the U.S. ALREADY accepts more legal immigrants than any other country in the world, as well as having tens of millions of ILLEGAL immigrants on top of this, so perhaps other countries should increase their immigration "slots" as well...
As far as your last sentence about our "ancestors emigrating". You do realize this is the year 2007, don't you??? It's not 1500, 1845, 1789, or any other date in history that you want to pick. In today's world, every country in the world has immigration laws and every country enforces them. Period. |

There is no bar to LEGAL immigration, it is the ILLEGAL immigrant that needs to be removed, they are a non-taxpaying drain on public resources. If we have a better standard of living, it is because our economy is stronger, thanks to a strong industrial and technological base, and an enfrachised, universal suffrage population. Let Mexico pull itself out of where it is, and they won't have to look north. In the meantime, I recommend the book "Guns, germs, and steel", which explains a lot of the why of the roots of modern cultural dominance |

I suppose that all people "deserve" better lives. So? Neither I, nor America prevent other nations from having their citizens have better lives. But, that doesn't mean that citizens of other nations somehow are US citizens, or that it is America's duty to secure better lives for them. Just as you worry about YOUR own family more than the families of strangers or neighbors, America is more concerned with how US citizens live, than how folks in other nations live. The US is supposed to be for US citizens. We, through our government decide who may enter the US. Just as you decide who may enter your home. Your home- your rules. Our home(US), our rules. Isn't it at least possible that IF the millions of Mexicans that are here illegally had stayed in Mexico and worked to improve Mexico, the lives of all Mexicans would be better? After all, Mexico isn't a new nation, and nothing prevented Mexico from building a nation as good as America. Mexico's failure to build a better nation, isn't the responsibility of the US, or US citizens. Why should fixing Mexico be our problem? |

It's called "reaping what you sow" our ancestors gave this country their BLOOD, sweat and tears to make this country great. The idea that illegals can just prance across the border and take whatever they want is wrong.
Are people in Mexico starving? No. Are people in Mexico being rounded up and executed for political gains? No. Are people in Mexico suffering because they can't buy cars, TVs and others kinds of material possessions? No. |

i don't think that deserve is part of the equation. it implies sense of entitlement ?
Is it fair that some people are born with wealthier parents, better educational opportunities higher IQ/apptitudes, good looks or exceptional talent ? to a certain extent, I think it's just unlucky that you are born where you are and with the gifts that you have. it's not always a case of the cards you get , but how you play them. but people make choices to do legal and illegal activities. would i cross the line ? maybe. probably to be honest. hard question to really answer. but the bottom line is it wouldn't be right . i have really struggled to understand this issue . i have good experiences with mexican people. i think that it's outrageous that they pay huge fees to coyotes to get out / risk life / and pay off immigration on the us side. then they get here , are charged 500.00 for drivers licenses , are taken advantage of by government and employers and are hated by neighbors . i see very hard working / highly ethical people that don't fit the criminal profile. they would love to be citizens and taxed. however, i saw explanation that finally made sense to me . the point was made that if you see a house in a better neighborhood , closer to good jobs , better schools , represents a better life does that mean i am entititled to just go move into that model house and take possession of it without paying for it ? imagine if a new subdivision had five model houses and suddenly someone just went on a tour of the home and decided to bring out a truckload of furniture and had the nerve to start moving their things into the house and taking possession of it illegally. i would think that the police would be called immediately and would respond. the person would be thrown out of that house fast. another example used was that of a garden. if my neighbor grows a better crop of tomatoes does that mean i can cross the property line to partake of her crop ? does she have an obligation to share with me if she sees i have less ? do i have the right to resent her if she does not choose to share ?
lots of hard questions ... i really struggle with what is right. are the laws right. wouldn't it benefit them and us more if we had easier citizenship/immigration processes ? so that people could live here legally. maybe you have a 5 you have a five year period before you are entitled to have same benefits. the IRS has figured out how to collect money owed for a lifetime ... i have no faith in their ability to squeeze the last nickel out of new citizens. lol. |

I've got a real good life, in a nice neighborhood with good people. I wish the illegals would come here and help make it even better, if they are so hard working, there's plenty of work here, the medical and dental is next to free, taxis are cheap, I rent a house for 140.00 $ a month, life is good here.
I live in central Mexico, come join me. |

The people of Mexico are no different from United States citizens, they deserve a fair shot at life however it is not the responsibility of the United States and its people to provide that life for them.
Poverty is not exclusive to Mexico, many other nations have much more poverty even to the point of deaths due to starvation. Mexico has a respectable economy but it does not necessarily trickle down to its people very well. The poverty in Mexico is mild when compared to many countries. |

I would think the answer to that is that our ancestors, and by that I mean Americans, busted their butts to provide a foundation for their descendants to prosper. That does not mean that Mexicans from years past did not do the same, but the way our economic and political system was set up gave us better opportunities.
Having said that, What you seem to be proposing is equality across the globe, truly a worthwhile dream, but completely unrealistic. There is no chance to bring everyone up to our standards, only to lower ourselves to the third worlds standards.
A nation has the right to control its borders and control immigration if it allows it. Perhaps Mexicans should work together to bring their own nation up to our standards or at least close to it by staying there and contributing with their 'hard work ethic' as you state. |
