Do you think that europe and america should close its borders to all unskilled immigrants like australia has?

australia has closed its borders to all non skilled immigrants to protect australian jobs , why can't europe do this as well , australia seems to look after its own people first, and the county is a lot better off for it

Yes.. and more.

The United States graduates people in every skill and field you can think of. Very frequently, the quality of the school, and the quality of the education in this country is beyond any other school of that sort in the world. It is the best technical education that can be had... bar none.

We can do that because we share one language. There are three excellent schools in photon generation in this country, and between them, no one competes on that level. You cannot bring anyone in from a foreign country with the same depth in the processes.. from anywhere.

I am telling you then, that this country doesn't need 'skilled' workers in any depth any where. Initally they were brought in to provide alternate ideas about how to accomplish a task. That information was fed back into the schools very quickly, and the changes they created were implemented rapidly. But now, the employers want the cheap wages that go with foreign workers, and will do their level headed best at this point, to break the wages of the American Workers. The results are almost specifically as you see them in this current economic meltdown.

If we look at Europe, and we look at the E.U., we are looking at many languages. Each of the countries of Europe have an extensive technical background, but they don't have the schools in any one country that provides the basis for students to become technically advanced. Europe, if they could adopt one language, could do an excellent job of bringing their students along with vast skills, just as the United States is doing. Not only can they not do that, they cannot seem to make the idea of a European Union above the nationalism of the individual countries work. I don't think it will ever work in fact. And so, yes: Europe should stop all unskilled workers from entering their country, and then, country by country, select which skill they allow into their Country to produce as they should in this very, very technical world.

The United States has more than its share of unskilled workers: 70% of some of our high schools are half full by the time the Seniors arrive at graduation. The rest drop out, and this country badly, badly needs every dish washing job it has.

. Expelling the cheap, unskilled, usually immigrant farm workers that the agricultural community is dependent upon would definitely raise prices - something no one seems to want even if it means more Americans are working and that is why prices went up

Illegal aliens take about 3% of the Ag jobs in California. The rest are done by American Citizens. And over all I believe the Hoover Institute indicated the illegal aliens do about 7% of the ag jobs. But assume we have two equal lots of lettece one picked by illegals, and the other picked by American Citizens. The batch picked by Americans would cost as much as 10cents more per head. On the other hand, we would be losing some significant part of the 480 billion dollar welfare funds costs. LOTS more information at http://www.fairus.org or http://www.cis.org

It's a good idea, but, it's a lot easier to do when your country is surrounded by oceans with no land borders.

to protect Australian jobs? Wouldn't bringing in skilled labor only threaten it?

LoL Australia is a island that shares NO land borders with any other country. Easy for them to do it. US and Europe shares borders with countries that extend basically to the other side of the globe. I'm sure if unskilled labors could get to Australia as quick and as easy as they get to the US and Europe. The Entrepreneurs in Australia would capitalize on it!

I think the government has to look after its own people first and foremost like australia does. If the UK stopped giving the immigrants benefits and housing and our jobs they wouldn't want to come. If australia opened its border to unskilled workers from the uk and gave us housing and benefits or well paid jobs there would be nobody left in the UK except the Asian & African immigrants? The Asian & African immigrants must read Yahoo Answers, when will they get the hint they are not wanted and go back to their own country?

I like their PM. He said, "If you don't like the laws and the way they do things there, they should leave."
He's got grit..

no I dont agree, until the economy is fixed in Mexico, we will always have people trying to get in our borders, because they want a better life, look at Canada, you dont see them trying to sneak over the border, its because their economy is good.

The US and Europe have pretty much closed their borders to unskilled immigrants from non-EU countries. European countries, however, can't limit the number of immigrants from other EU countries as much as they want to because that stands above the national level. Unlike AUS, countries like the UK HAVE TO let immigrants in because they are in the EU and it is a popular destination for all immigrants because job opportunities are better there than what you could ever get in continental Europe. The number of legal unskilled workers is negligible in the US. That's why they hire illegals and nobody could resolve the illegal immigration problem. Don't mix up illegals with legals. Like other people have said, AUS is an island that is not easy to get into for illegals since it shares no borders with other countries.

Yes, lets do away with our greatest strength! Its not like America was built, founded and enjoyed many prosperous years because of its acceptance of tired, poor, unskilled masses yearing to be free... oh wait. Yeah it was.

Having grown up in a European country and now living in California, I think I can nail both of these for you pretty well. My observations, anyway.

Northern Europe has a highly skilled work force and well educated population. We're good at that kind of thing there. What we're not too good at there is convincing people to take "grunt jobs" as they call them here in California, USA. Unskilled immigrant labor in Northern Europe does fulfill a need if based only on the local population's own sense of intellectual superiority. (I know. I just bashed on my own homeland in a way...) However, there aren't a lot of them to be found. Not to the degree that it's found in the US, at least.

A similar issue is at work in California. For those who may not be aware, California is a major agricultural region. I certainly did not know that before I moved here. I thought it was border to border concrete jungle with a few greenbelts thrown in to make it look pretty. While the population here is not as well educated as the population back home (you have to actually PAY to go to Uni here, even if you're very smart!), I have direct experience with at least two unemployed people who would not take seasonal farm labor work because they "had a degree" or "couldn't take that kind of pay cut". Some people, no matter how well educated, seem to think that being paid per pound for how many strawberries you pick (which is still done by hand) is still worse than getting nothing due to their chronic unemployment.

Also, California's big advantage (besides the year round growing season) is how cheap our produce happens to be when it hits the market. Expelling the cheap, unskilled, usually immigrant farm workers that the agricultural community is dependent upon would definitely raise prices - something no one seems to want even if it means more Americans are working and that is why prices went up. The success of various dollar stores and Wal*Mart, stores that thrive on sales of cheaply produced products from countries with little or no worker protections, are great evidence for that, are they not?

Yeah, I think they should- Europe & America should close all existing borders with Australia-if there ARE any such borders-and build the wall such as at U.S.-Mexico border, to keep those pesky inept Aussies out.
