It already has and still does limit the number of legal immigrants and it should definitely continue to do so. Otherwise, half of the world would try to find it's way here (given our freedoms and economic opportunity) and we can only handle a certain amount of growth over a certain period of time. This isn't a matter of wanting to restrict the welfare and opportunity of others, but maintaining the standard of living for those that are already here. That is why we encourage other countries to adopt our style of economy and government. The trouble is that belief systems of other cultures and societies don't necessarily fit with our model.

If they didn't, I think most Americans could easily be replaced at their jobs. Unskilled jobs don't take any special skills, so the jobs go to the cheapest laborers (immigrants). As far as skilled jobs go, many countries have much better education systems than we do, so the best jobs would go to the best educated, and all the American people who got far just because there is nobody else to do their job would be replaced. But our jobs will go to non-Americans one way or another (either here or get outsourced abroad)--foreign workers/immigrants are simply cheaper and better educated, so if you don't like this get a better education so you can compete in the global marketplace.

There is already a limit to permanent resident immigration. It is a percent-age of citizens. It is a little over 675,000 people usually related to an American citizen - less than 175,000 are non-family related people (often employment related). The illegals who come in by name are illegals & should be limited. If everyone who wanted to come into the US was allowed to, we would have
a drain on our economy that would strangle us. More people want to come into the country than can be assimilated into our society. These limits have been in place for a long time & it is our law.

Yes, I think it's time to put a limit on it. I know that we love being the nation that helps everyone and are there when they need us but we're going to run out of money eventually. No other country in the world will let immigrants move in then support them. There is no way I could move into Mexico then expect their governtment to provide health care when I get sick or to give me money when I'm poor. I couldn't do it in France, Canada, or England. We need to use our resources to help our people. We have citizens living on the street, neighbors who cant send there kids to college, cant we take care of ourselves first?

Don't get me wrong I'm not racist nor do I think we should completely halt all immigration but a limit would be good.

I realise that our country was built on an "open door policy" but we also murdered Indians to take their land so that we could have enough room for ourselves, and after my family has been here for 5 generations I think that it's time I just consider myself an American.

Of course. This is especially true in the era of a welfare state. People don't realize that during the great migration of European immigrants, many people were turned away.

Yes the country can only assimilate so many people at a stretch you have to give the people a chance to integrate into society or its the mess just like you have now...

I think the number of legal immigration is already limited in the US. Also, approvals are based country of origin, not unlike affirmative action and also based on on racial group. Migrants and descedants of preferred countries are more readily accepted. Please correct me if i am wrong.

Of course they should. An open door policy should only apply to people who follow the rules and who are eligable to come here. No felons, and only people who are determined to become citizens and learn the language.

Yes there should be a limit...what the number is, well that should be figured out by a lot of statistical research. The increase of immigrants causes a loss of jobs and a burden on our society for having to pay taxes into paying their health insurance and so on. Some politicians want us to believe that they take jobs that most Americans want that is untrue, many of them are building houses for cheap wages and good carpenters( citizens) can make $30 an hour or more. Also a lot of them live very meager means such as in trailers with a dozen others, car pool and so on and send most of it to their families in other countries, so it is not going back into our economy which is horrible. I have personally heard legal immigrants brag that they have multiple houses in Mexico....isn't that appalling???? We as a country cannot save every country by taking them in. It is sad the fate of some people in third world countries but some how they have to learn to better them selves, we did not become a free country just by wishing it to come true, our ancestors fought many battles and died for our freedom. I think we should help the less fortunate in many ways but not take every unfortunate or opportunistic soul in. Before we know it we are going to run out of land, then what will our children do?

Yes, the number of new americans should be entered legal, our fore fathers were all immigrants, but they came here legally, ( Ellis Island ) they also learned to speak english, children taught Mom & Dad english after school, our tax money should not be consumed by illegals when we have a proverty problem, take care of home folks first, & make, and keep english as the only language

Yes the country can only take care of so many of them, their are not enough jobs for the people who live here legally.And as a tax payer iam tired of taking care of people immigrants or not.

I personaly would like to be in America at the moment with my partner who is an American born and raised, but I have to wait 6 - 9 months for someone to tell me that at the end of it I can go to America as an alien, I resent being called an alien for starters, between us we have children, so I intend to stay at home and raise our famialy while my partner maintains his good job, if I leave the kids to a child minder I could be there a lot quicker, thats just crazy in my opinion! I cant understand how so many people live in that country against the law and yet a person like me who has never broken any law and wants to raise happy healthy children and be a good wife has to wait up to a year to be told Im an alien. in between that the Visa that you need to apply for is actually about eight smaler Visas and each one you have to pay a small fortune for, none of them are simple to fill out and a laywer can help with that, as there are now millions of special lawyers that deal with immagration alone as its now become such good buisness, it is a money scam at best!
America as a nation has a broken immagration system and thats a fact, immigrants actually contribute to US economic groth, and with the price of them darn Visas I can understand how, yes I think your nation should do something about it, but I will prolly never live to see it due to the greed of mankind!

YES, but those married to US citizens should be given a easier path, we must wait a long time for what?? all who are here just for profit should leave, that's like 75% of the total here, they are the ones without just cause, I'm American, married 6 years to a Mexican girl still lost in immigration, that's very inhumane and disrespectful to me.
