I am applying for a visit visa to stay in the UK for 6 months. I just filled my app online and it says i have to send supporting documents to the british embassy here in los angeles but it doesnt specify exactly what documents. Also i will be staying at a friend's house so can anyone help me in what the documents are and how much money they expect you to have? the people i am staying with will be supporting me, as in letting me stay with them. thanks!

You do not need a visa if you should be a citizen of the United States or of 62 other countries. You may travel visa-free and just obtain a "remain to leave" stamp on your passport on entry.
If you should be a national of a country which requires a visa you should follow the procedures of your country unless you are holding a residence permit of another country and may be authorized to apply there.

Politically Correct

Ask your friends to send you a letter inviting you to stay. Make sure that they specify that they will be housing and feeding you. Forward it unopened to the Consulate.

Other documents that will be useful are
1. Evidence you will be returning (work, study, lease etc)
2. A return ticket
