Yeah, it makes my blood boil. It's ok to be Welsh, Scottish and Irish but not English. Why? I regard myself as English first, British second!

GoodJuJu2U
Normally no but I was registering my Borders Rewards online and one of the question was: Do you consider yourself to be of Hispanic origin.

That threw me because they weren't asking about any other origin I might consider myself to be. I thought it was a very oddly random question.

i'm from belfast, job monitoring forms dont ask for nationality, if they did i would stick down irish but they do ask for religion. and only 3 options are present.

i am a member of the roman catholic community

i am a member of the protestant community

i am neither a member of the roman catholic or protestant community.

Your passport says British not English the same as mine says British not Scottish- I agree with the forms, I filled one in today for a large supermarket and they asked if I was from Northern Ireland what religion was I, catholic or Protestant? what difference does that make?.

I would if I came from a country like saudi arabia. Terrible terrible, backward thinking, brutal place.

No I am proud to be English what I do object to is being asked my ethnicity.

Catwhiskers
Any form I have filled in like this normally states "white european" which applies to most british people.
I am scottish and they dont have a "scottish" nationality option.
I dont mind filling in forms like this.

Yes especially the US visa waiver forms as the is not enough space for the nation of citizenship -
'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'

nah ! i'm english and proud to write it anywhere!

The Lilac Pilgrim
No, because I'm British, that's what it usually says on the forms. You don't hear me complaining because half the forms I sign don't say "Scottish". In fact, I've never seen a modern application form that says "Scottish" on it... Or Welsh... I wonder if that's cause to be upset, too.

What kind of forms are you filling in? The last ones I had to fill in had nationality - and here is a few of them that were listed:

English
Scottish
Irish
Welsh

Well there you go UK and beyond in the top four!!!

vdv_desantnik
nationality also is not listed on any of these forms I fill in, not even in any of the blanket groups

hopper13
I have to say i struggle a lot with knowing whether to write english or british!

robertlazi
No. I don't resent that there is a form to be filled in which asks for nationality and does not have "English" on it. They may be a wee bit ahead of their time, but apt none the less.

Rule britania days are over. Just as the Angs then the Romans once ran this island, so soon too will another sect.

As far as I know, it is not legal to have this question mandatory on any form. Could be exceptions when it comes to immigration forms, not sure. Its kind of an oxymoron, this field started popping up as part of affirmitive action on job and work applications, citing that preference would be given to visible minorities. I think you end up perpetuating racism by singling out races even if it is in their favour. When it comes to the workplace or a job opening, the best qualified person should get the job regardless of race, colur, creed, No?

Loose Wheel
That is a problem I have not encountered yet, as the finishing touches have not been put in place on the North American Union. But I am confused about the fact that most forms in the US have only one question concerning race now: "Are you hispanic or other than hispanic?"

For me, being Welsh, is not a problem to say I am British. Because in spite of what some people believe, the Welsh are actually British by race - Brythonic Celts in fact.

I understand only too well the annoyance of those who wish to declare their Englishness and state they are English. I am entirely in favour of people putting down their ace name/group if they so please.

The most puzzling thing about modern form filling is that there is a separate section for the Irish, but not one for the Scottish, Welsh, Cornish or English.

No so many years ago when I obtained my first passport in 1959, we then entered our race and nationality as follows :

British/English
British/Welsh
British/Scottish

If it was felt important enough in 1959, what changed? Have the English disappeared? Or is it that so many people now do not think of themselves as English and prefer to use the nationality of British as though it were not a race name too?

Strangest of all is that there are many American these days, Dolly Parton among them, who want to declare their Englishness. Dolly Parton when asked, will tell you she is English.

William Shakespeare was an Englishman, so too was Winston Churchill and neither would have liked to fill in any form without being able to state this fact loud and clear.

Of course English is never there. The world uses British. Why separate the Uk more. English, scottish, N. Ireland, Wales. Its all British. Why put England? Only a english person who could not see the bigger picture would struggle with this. I am always pleased to tick British. Always.

Jeffrey B
Well, I don't get angry that "English" isn't there, because I was born in the United States. But I would if I was from there. I think if it was an important form, it would have "English" as a choice.

fed up woman
No, I resent more when they ask for your racial type.
