I used to argue strongly in defense of illegal immigrants before the demonstrations started. The illegal immigrants opened my eyes and made me realize just how wrong I had been. I did not realize just how much these illegals detest Americans, especially white Americans, until I saw them with my own eyes referring to us in such derogatory manner. I know personally of at least 3 other people who had this same revelation. These illegals lost a lot of supporters all across the country by revealing just how arrogant and entitlement minded they are.
Upon this revelation I started doing my own research into the manner and found out about the millions of people that get hurt by having their social security numbers stolen and their identities stolen by these illlegals. I found out how much harm has been done to this country by these people. And I am now outraged.
And the insults saying I am lazy because I am a white American and that I wouldn't do the work infuriates me. I have applied for just such jobs numerous times and keep getting told that I'm "overqualified." I have been froze out of the job market because I actually was motivated enough to persue higher education. So now fast food places REFUSE to hire me. And these illegals that I had been defending all of these years have the audacity to call me lazy saying I wouldn't do this work? After I have personally gave food and clothing to some of them? After I have cared for them? I felt like I had been slapped in the face and stabbed in the back at the same time. They will never get my support again.
So I am in graduate school now doing graduate assistantships because I couldn't find a job with my degree since I had no experience and I apparently educated myself out of the available job market in my area EVEN THOUGH I WAS PERFECTLY WILLING TO DO THE WORK BECAUSE I AM NOT LAZY AND HAVE WORKED MY BUTT OFF ALL OF MY LIFE. I have worked my way up from being homeless and pregnant as a teenager after I had been raped and beaten by my ex-husband in retaliation for leaving him nearly killing me, leaving me with disabilities. I sometimes had to go days without food because I had been beaten so bad I was unable to work my job anymore. I had a lot of health problems while I was going to college for my undergraduate degree and was in and out of the hospital with several surgeries so I struggled to keep up my grades, but even with all of that I still managed to make presidents and deans list. I had a high grade point average, because in spite of my medical problems I was NOT LAZY, I was NOT UNMOTIVATED, and I am definately a hard worker.
So yes, not only did the May 1st protest hurt them, the whole protest leading up to May 1st hurt them as well. I know I am not the only person who got a huge wake up call. |

Heck yea! Hopefully, it opened the eyes of the silent majority of Americans who are normally too lazy to get involved and stand up for something. Below is an excerpt from a LA Paper re the "protest":
"It appears that the Immigration March last Monday in Los Angeles was a success! According to data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff, Los Angeles had a reduction in the following:
82% reduction - auto theft
28% " " - murders/ violent crimes/ rapes
73% " " - vandalism / tagging
54% " " - drug related offenses (not including the area surrounding the march)
31% " " - domestic violence cases
64% " " - misdemeanor cases (shop lifting, etc.)
The California Highway Patrol reported that last Monday was a record low in the least amount of traffic accidents on South CA freeways."
Gotta Love It! |

Yes it hurt them, especially Mexicans because it highlighted the amount of illegals on U.S. soil.
I speak Spanish, study Latin American history, politics and culture and I don't agree with illegal immigration.
I hate that Americans don't realize though that Mexicans aren't just the only ones here in large numbers, there are tons of Asians, and a large number of Eastern Europeans here illegally mainly due to U.S. companies and their need for cheap labor. As a country we need to wake up and get angry at how big business basically runs the country. |

Yes, it hurt them. Just speaking for myself, it made me aware of how big the problem of illegal immigrants really is. I hadn't thought much about it before, except to grouse about it a little. I was familiar with it because I worked at Tyson's several years ago and there were many illegals employed there. My niece worked for them in a different location last year, and the same thing was true. I think they did themselves a disservice by making more legals aware of the extent of the problem.
I don't think they should be given blanket amnesty. If they can meet whatever the conditions of citizenship happen to be, then let them do so. I've no problem with immigrants, only illegals.
I'd like to take this opportunity to point out a fallacy in their argument that Americans won't do the jobs they do. If Americans currently are refusing to do those jobs, it is simply because the illegals are willing to work for so little compensation that they have driven the wages way down. When I was growing up, many different types of people did field work, including me, my brothers and sisters and my mother. I understand from comments other people have posted that the illegals live 15 or 20 in one apartment, thus saving money, many of them collect food stamps and other benefits, and send most of the money they make back to their home, wherever they might come from. This enables them to work for a much lower wage than most Americans could subsist on.
Americans don't/can't do that and get away with it. For one thing, they can't send the money back to their home, because they're already home.
Then there's the anchor babies. If an illegal gives birth here, the baby is an American citizen, right? Well, we're not going to deport the mother and keep the baby, and we can't send the baby out of the country because it has no passport. Quite a dilemma, huh? So in the interests of being humane, we allow the mother and the rest of the family to remain here because we can't deport the baby. Doesn't it sound something like emotional blackmail to you? Don't you think we need to change the law to read if the mother is illegal so is the baby?
Well, time to get off my soapbox. |

I have to agree with Pancha's answer. Unless there was some kind of economic disaster, there's prob. no way to get all the support you would need to have them deported and prosecuted. The 'American' people want an answer now, they aren't willing to wait years to have the problem under control, meaning that the quickest 'answer', 'amnesty' will be used to appease 'us'. If the 'American' people could be convinced to wait a decade or more to have the majority of illegal immigrants deported, it could be done. This is not a 'leak' that sprang up over night. It took years for things to get this bad, and it would take years to correct. |

I think it hurt them. It certainly made me more anti illegal immigration than I was before. However, I think the agitators of the march and boycott were really trying to demonstrate their own ability to command a crowd. I sincerely doubt they had the true interests of illegal immigrants at heart. I feel sorry for the illegal immigrants. They are like driftwood on the surf, at this point.
I'd secure the borders and legalize qualified illegals already here, then get to work on deporting felons and gang members. I would throw out the rest of the guest worker program, though, for now. |

Yes. The date is very telling. May day (may 1st) is the traditional day used by communists as an official day of the beginning of national strikes as a method of collapsing an economy and then a government for a communist takeover.
And that is exactly who was behind the May 1st "protests". International ANSWER is typical. It's a front for the World Workers Party, which takes its order directly from North Korea. |

the illegal immigration is a really big problem for the American government but they do not want to do something to fix it, illegal in migration came coz they found jobs here, easy like that! the day they realize they can't work illegal in this country that day the illegal immigration will stop!!!!, so don't hate illegal hate the people who bring all this people they charge over 3,000 dollar for each Mexican, they are the real problem. |

I know that I didn't care much before May 1st.... now I'm ready to start a militia against ALL illegals. notice: I said ALL I don't care what race they are... illegal is illegal. All the other races can just thank the Mexicans who protested for making this a bigger issue, and getting people who (like me) were undecided or at best unpassionate about it, all stirred up. |

i think it hurt their cause...since when can one group of people break the law and then protest that they are treated unfairly by the government...and they are not even citizens!!!! |

First... I wish "Just a Mom" would have sited her stats.
BTW - stats during a one or two day period of rallies does little to prove anything. Ever wonder what the crime rate is in Boston during the Boston Marathon? If it went up, does that mean Marathon runners are a bunch of criminals? And what if it went down, would that mean that all the criminals decided to run the Boston Marathon?
Actually, the protest was in part a failure due to its inability to prevent idiotic political attacks. The protests did not have a clear, simple, positive and unified message. Instead, the disorganization and lack of political vision lobed a political softball to the "anti-immigrant" groups.
One final note... While Hispanics currently might be the larger immigrant group, the May 1st protest was multi-racial and multi-ethnic. |
