Does getting the U.S. citizenship make me easier to get a job in the United States?
Find answers to your legal question.

Does getting the U.S. citizenship make me easier to get a job in the United States?

I am a 22-year old recent graduate from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities with B.S. degree in Mathematics looking for an actuarial job, and I have lived in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for at least five years. My parents think that getting a U.S. citizenship will help me get a full-time job easier since now I am just a permanent resident. Do you guys think employers subconsciously discriminate between permanent resident graduates and U.S. citizen graduates? I appreciate your thoughtful responses.

1. A bachelors degree in math is not a really great qualification. There are millions of recent bachelor's degree holders in EVERY field looking for work. Over 31 million Americans are desperately searching for jobs these days. The real unemployment rate is 22% and has been 20% or more for over a year now. Among those 16 - 24, unemployment rate is at least 52%. There's your real problem - no jobs.
2. You need experience! What internships have you taken where? What did you really do during your internship? You've got to get some experience and references, referrals somewhere somehow.
3. Work on your English if you need to, especially for pronunciation. For a college grad, it might not be good enough. The way you speak can matter a great deal, especially for job interviews. You write fairly well, and should be ok there. Check your pronunciation, get a few accent reduction lessons with a linguist if needed.
4. As long as you are legally resident in the US and have the papers to prove it, nobody knows or cares whether you are LPR or new/recent citizen. They only get irate, upset, angry, etc at those who have violated immigration laws. Legal immigrants are quite welcome.

To be honest, you have a better chance just because you are from another country. Microsoft is famous for hiring American educated and foreign students here on a visa. I am not being sarcastic when I say that Americans are discriminated against from our own American corporations. Now, if you want a government job, get the citizenship which is a requirement but will put you ahead of an American because the government discriminates against Americans also.

I would wish you luck but you won't need it.

Nope, but mastering the English language might help. Some of your grammar was wrong, and a lot of it sounded very strange.

Do not think you would be subject to discrimination but being a US
citizen opens up a lot more employment opportunities as most all
federal, state, and local government jobs are open to US citizens only.

Donna
No I do not think they discriminate between the 2. At least that has been out experience. As long as you are in status and can prove it, most reputable companies will hire you.

I would be extremely careful about getting US citizenship. If you become a US citizen then decide you want to go back home, you are still subject to US tax laws, and required to file a US tax return..irregardless of what country you live and work in. As it is, as a permanent resident, if you left today and gave up your green card, you would be required to do the same thing for the next 10 yrs.

there was absolutley nothing wrong with her grammer. maybe the words were a little too big for your brain to process or something.

You would be better off where you were born. Ciao
