Does having a grandparent who was a canadian citizen help if I seek citizenship?

Does having a grandparent who was a canadian citizen help if I seek citizenship?

I'm an american citizen; my grandfather was a canadian citizen...he had permission to reside in the US (he had to go back every five years to renew his permission), but he never obtained american citizenship. I know that does not automatically make me a canadian citizen, but would that be a factor on my side if I decided to try and get canadian citizenship? Also, he was full-blooded native american (making me a quarter) and a member of a tribe in Quebec; does that carry any weight?

If your grandfather was full-blood Native American and was a First Nations member (Status Indian) and you are only 2 generations removed, making you a ÂĽ. You could be recognized as an Indian in Canada and qualify for Status and First Nation (Band) membership.

In that case, you could legally enter Canada, but you may have to apply for a visa/citizenship to be able to work in Canada.

For those who are only 1 generation removed, they don't have to apply for citizenship because having a parent who was a citizen they can also be recognized as a Canadian citizen. But that does not apply for people who are 2 generations removed.

Actually I am not quite sure how that works for an American Indian with Canadian “Status” You should get the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development to advise you on the requirements of citizenship.

You need to trace your genealogy and obtain proper documentation.

If you don’t know your grandfathers First Nation (Band) then apply to the "Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development".

They have the records and can identify the First Nation (Band). Register with the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. Then you can apply to the First Nation (Band) for membership.

The Indian Register

Federal Programs and Services for Registered Indians
• WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR REGISTRATION?
• HOW DO I APPLY FOR REGISTRATION?
http://www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/ai/pubs/ywtk/ywtk-eng.asp#hdas

If you don’t qualify for First Nation (Band) membership (Status Indian), You won’t qualify for any programs or services in Canada. In that case you will have to apply for Canadian citizenship to live and work in Canada.

If you are a first nations member then see above answer.

Otherwise canadian citizenship can only be passed down ONE generation to children, NOT to grandchildren. Sorry.

If you wish to IMMIGRATE to Canada, you must have a degree, and work experience and you can apply as a skilled worker.
This however WILL take a few years to be processed.
