No, it makes me mad when some person does not have the brains to understand that it is better to communicate in more than one language. Do you feel the same way about going to Chinatown and the signs are in Chinese? Or if you go to Koreatown and the signs are in Korean? Have you ever read your passport and noticed that it is written in English, Spanish and French? Imagine at the time the country was founded, German could have become the official language. I bet you did not know that.

Perhaps you think that getting somewhere safely is not as important as knowing English.

Have you ever traveled to Mexico and noticed that half of the large signs in almost every tourist town is also in English?

Did you hear that joke about the person that can only speak one language and has a bad attitude? That's an American..

I have traveled quite a bit and even people from England speak, read and write a foreign language. The reasons: a) their proximity to Spain; and, b) the level of education and love of culture.

I have also met Australians and Canadians that love to speak spanish. I was truly surprised at their ability to speak the language. When I was in Guam in February, one of the official languages is Spanish. Same with the Philipines.

I just think you are frustrated that the U.S. is becoming global and Spanish is becoming a second official language here. It is like if you went to China and got upset because half of the signs are in English.

For your information, many wealthy Spanish speaking people vacation here too.

let me give you a new one: most high school students learn spanish as their foreighn language....does that make you MAD? if you get mad at those things, i realy hope you dont die from getting diabetes...just chill out. Make yourself useful and stop thinking about insignificant issues. I really hope you never go on vacation to any oter part of the world. How uncultured and direspectful can you get.

So, all these stats,and what about the percentage of us that are bilingual?

And I think it is really neat to see stuff in other languages. Makes me feel like we are becoming more and more diverse. But the things that I see with spanish written first are usually things in a place that the magority of shoppers are the spanish speakers. And in those places I am thankful for the english labels on the back.

Speak / read / write English, or dont come here to live and work. It is that simple.

If you want to live or work in this country, then you should be able to read and comprehend the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

I agree with you, It makes me mad. Because there are hispanics, or from other races that come here and DONT bother to learn english. It makes me angry, Although I speak Spanish I hate when the government put their applications in spanish and so forth like that, that don't help them learn english!!! Also I hate that now we also HAVE CHINESSE signs and banners! LEARN ENGLISH!!!!

It makes me angry when I see Spanish officially on any large company's literature. It's not difficult to look around and see that language is one thing that bonds a country together. Just look recently to events in Belgium. Look at Quebec. It's not rocket science, but to get these greedy companies that only care about profits, not the country, to stop doing it we'd have to make some law.

If I gotta dig thru any language before english it makes me mad. This is America doggone it. Every dang time I get something it's got instructions in every dang language and you gotta find the english. Shoot I get so mad sometimes I feel like shipping the dang thing back.

I'd also like to add that It’s not about “changing” English, it’s about *adding* Spanish alongside English. Spanish wouldn’t even have equal status with English; I don’t see why it should have official status in Maine (1% of the population), for example. Official Spanish wouldn't even effect most Americans. I maintain that it would probably be better to implement it at a city, county or state level. So California, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, New York and Florida or some of the more Hispanic counties/cities/towns within them would recognize Spanish as an official language. Perhaps there's a cause for federal Spanish as well, but it's more important to recognize it at a regional level.

I actually cannot believe the level of pathological xenophobia present in the United States today. Even in Pakistan, which is a country totally wracked with destructive and poisonous nationalism regional languages are recognized (although it has much less religious freedom). What made this idea of one country = one language so popular? The idea of a linguistically homogeneous nation-state is a product of 19th century nationalist fantasies, it doesn't have any basis in actual reality. Just take a look at this list of official languages by country: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_official_languages_by_state . Notice how many countries have more than one official language! Yes, Wikipedia is flawed, but I think we can get a general picture of the situation from this article. So from my count, 120 countries recognize more than one language, 71 countries only recognize one, and 5 countries recognize no languages and have only one de facto official language. This means that 61% of countries have more than one official language. I think I might have miscounted a little bit ( ;) ) but you get the general idea. Did you know that even in the *United Kingdom*, the birthplace of the English language, minority Celtic languages are recognized? Newsflash: the world is linguistically diverse. The US is no exception. What about Puerto Rico? Should they all forget Spanish because they’re part of the US? What about the Hispanics who have lived in northern New Mexico since before the US controlled the area? Have you heard of the French-speaking Cajuns? They were expelled by the British from Canada for refusing to swear allegiance to the British Crown. They’ve lived in Southern Louisiana ever since. Many of them even became interpreters for the US in World War II, helping them converse with French locals. However, after World War II English was imposed on the region and after a generation or so French-speakers became a minority. Do you endorse people not being able to speak with their grandparents anymore? Why couldn’t the Cajuns be allowed to retain their French *and* add English *as well* to be more successful in American society? There are other examples of *native* minority languages (languages that stayed stable in the US for many generations) - French (endangered since after WWII), Spanish (healthy, for now), Pennsylvania German (declined to just Amish after WWI and II), Louisiana Creole (endangered) and Dutch (extinct since around WWI), not to mention all the indigenous languages like Navajo, Cherokee and Sioux. Hell, Native American children were sent to boarding schools and punished if they were caught using their language! That’s why comments like “THIS IS AMERICA. THE LANGUAGE IS ENGLISH” get to me, they’re just FALSE, and patently so.
