Don't you think all people need to learn the english language?

I think children that don't speak English should be taught separately until they can fluently understand what is being taught to them in English. I had a problem with my son in the third grade because he was so distracted listening to a foreign language while he is also trying to learn what was new to him in plain english. If a child can not pass an english appitute placement test before attending public school, then I believe a separate class would be appropriate. If I went to live in another country where I did not speak the language, do you think they would make any allowance for me or my child?

You cannot obtain success in this country if you do not speak English.

All you can do hun is tell your child that its okay to talk in certain places but when tring to come across professional and sound tactful not to talk that way. You are a educated Mexicana and i know you can do it! Talking like a chola aint cool lol

You know, you're absolutely right and a lot of Spanish speaking people agree with you but unfortunately not enough do. The USA is made up of people of all different ethnic origins & unfortunately Spanish speaking immigrants of the past 1/4 century are the only ones who haven't thought it to be important to learn English.

I was once married to a Greek woman (military thing). Her daughter could not speak English when she moved here. She was placed in English immersion classes that delayed her entering School for one year.

One of her friends from Mexico had a daughter the same age. That woman insisted on a bilingual education for her daughter.

The Greek girl recently graduated and is heading towards Yale. The Mexican girl struggled with school and English for her entire life, dropped out in the 10th grade. I believe that learning English was the key to the Greek girls success.

The funny thing about it is that she can read, write and speak Greek like a native.

Going to any country without knowing it's language is like going skuba diving without an oxigen tank. Its just stupid not to know the native language of the country your living in.

I think so because what I think is that if you live in this country you should speak English, and understand it. My brother works in demo and his co-works don't speak English so it's very hard for him to work with them.

I got a story my neighbor she was born in Portugal she never went to school in America and she speaks perfect English, and no one helped her learn she did it herself.

I tired of going to stores and having people you can't understand because they don't know much English.

I 100% agree with u, i was born here, but my parents are from El Salvador and i agree that if you come from another country you should learn English first. English is the main language here in the US and people dont seem to get that and they assume they dont need to learn it. You should try sending your child to a private school, i went to one and the education they give there is extremely good,

I too was placed in the ESL classes and my mom had fit. She couldn't believe that I, a citizen of this country was being placed there. I, at that age, had no idea how much a great decision she made to get me into normal classes.. I had friends in the ESL classes that went through it from Junior High to High School and some didn't even graduate from High School and/or struggled through HS. Hell, I graduated with a 4.0 gpa..so yes in a way ESL holds back a lot of potential that some of these kids have...and instead we get mediocrity or less. Not good for the future of the US if you ask me. As for speaking English just at school, well, I would say let them speak what they want during lunch or break times...but not during class time.

Everyone should have English as their first language if they live in the United States. If you came here from another country you need to learn it.

If I moved to another country I would have to adapt to their language and traditions.

In England and North America (Canada, USA), yes, everyone needs to speak at LEAST English. Spanish may be a good thing to have as well, but since that is our original language, we should keep it.

No matter what the politically correct crowd likes to think, English is the way business is done. If you are going to succeed in this country, it is essential that the skills of English are adopted.
Interesting question. Could it be that the left's opposition to English as the national language has more to do with keeping people separated, and therefore less politically powerful, so as to enhance their position as defenders of the "oppressed" as groups rather than encourage the achievements of members of such groups who then may take exception to being labeled as "victims"?

Of course everybody in America should speak English! Our schools are so full of Spanish speaking kids that only hear Spanish at home. And when they start school they have to be taught how to speak English. Meanwhile the other students have to be taught Spanish just to understand the Spanish kids. And now it's a plus to speak Spanish if you're a teacher. And in some places it's a must. I don't have anything against Spanish people because my kids are half Spanish, but they need to stop shoving Spanish down our throats!

I have talked with many European women , especially from Eastern Europe, and they all know English. Some better than Americans. They are being taught in school because they say most world business is conducted in English. If you think going from Spainish to English is tough, can you imagine going from Russian to English?

As a Filipina in your situations and I felt I'm offended because some people are not the accepted from the whose people were came from the countries and in my experience when I was college I'll tried to speak English to my mentor is a Chinese but she cannot understand about my questions in Filipino(Tagalog) during the class and I'll tried to tried to speak my English until it perfect to speak my English fluently.We must to learned about on how to speak English and English speaking is very important and how to communicated with the our people especially the some foreigners in the different countries and this is part of our Traditions.

The first 3-5 years of a child life are the period of the most learning , they learn the basic skills they are going to make them prosper in the rest of their lives when they learn to walk and talk, etc .Usually the non white child goes into the school system, The school system disregards the first 5 years of a child life and implements a whole new process of re-socialization with the aim of the child's Assimilation (to remold them) into the values of the dominate culture, in 1974 the Supreme Court found in a case titled Lau vs Nichols, That the school system could not deny an education, because of the language they spoke (to teach them in a language they did not understand). Thus was the birth of bilingual education I believe your child is in a bilingual class as a recommendation of her teachers,use the native language as a bridge to learn other subjects like,math,science,Geography to not fall behind in those subject while the child becomes proficient in the English language, if you as a parent do not want your child in a bilingual class, you have the right to withdraw your child from the class after signing a waiver that you are doing so against educational advise and the school system is to be held harmless if your child learns at a slower pace.
