Like what process/test/difficulties. i already no that they had to come in boats (which is a difficulty), but wat else.

Back in the late 1800's, all immigrants were processed through Ellis Island. All they needed was paper stating who they were such as a birth certificate and papers stating where they were coming from. There were no citizenship tests or anything else like there is today. Sometimes, their names were shortened or changed as they entered the U.S. and you have to look back through the 1800's to see where they were coming from and why. Like during the potato famine in Ireland, a lot of the immigrants that came here were from Ireland.
