People that entered the USA in the period of 1800 until 1960...enter this country with love and the best intentions to learn, work hard, create businesses..and learn English...join the USA armed forces..they learn and understood Civic and Criminal laws, USA cultures habits and activities...An Immigrant like myself that entered in USA before 60 years...my ambitions were to stay away from trouble, work hard, learn English write-read- and speak, learn all the articles of the Constitution, understand my priviliges and rights...find the right woman...create a familly, save and then invest..get 3 children through College with high degrees...but most important..I loved this country...and before yet to become a USA citizen and I was , I am now and any time in the future I am willing to die, with out second thought to protect and save the USA, the constitution and another American Citizen or USA citizens from any harm and danger that is coming towards him or them....But to day the new Immigrants with few exceptions that come in this country, they enter with a chip in their shoulder...they blame USA for all their ills that are hapening in their countries from where they come from... Instead blame their own goverments for the pain that they inflict on their own people, and they feel USA owns them a lot. Simply they want great luxury life...with out paying their dues as every body else done. So- Friend new Immigrant... I do n't care where you came from ...if you want to stay in USA..and be happy...learn English as much as you can..start loving this country that puts food on your table, shelter over your head, and clothes on your body....and most important this country that you much hate...provides you with laws to secure your freedoms...health...finanances...educati... you and your familly...So smile...no matter how hard you think you have it now... Here in USA ...if you take time to think about it it is a lot better than the living conditions you had in your own country before you came here, and nevder forget these conditions made you to immigrate here ...So educate your self, work, save, invest.. and most importat start loving this country that we call USA....and in the long run you will be fine.-

Even though labor conditions were horrible for many children laborers, there were still many skilled laborers that immigrated from places like Italy, Germany, and Ireland. The Irish for example helped build the Erie Canal, much of the railroad lines and did a lot of construction work -- all skilled labor. Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell were both immigrants.

Furthermore, many immigrants worked skilled factory and manufacturing jobs during the latter part of the industrial revolution.
