The hospital takes a loss for that expense and then turn around and charge higher prices for services which raises our insurance premiums or shuts down the emergency room (which is what some hospitals are doing).... I guess we pay in one way or another, unfortunately...

The hospital absorbs the cost, passes it onto your insurance carrier by way of increased fees, your insurer passes the cost onto your employer, your employers passes it onto you by way of decreased raises and high co-pays

I know it sounds crazy but it is Federal law.

That's why so many hospitals in the south west are closing up and going out of business. Legal citizens have to travel great distances for medical care in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

You and I (and every other legal tax paying citizen) pay for it in increased health care cost, tax subsidies to the hospitals, and gas to get to another hospital.

It's outrageous! Contact you Congressmen and Senate Representatives and tell them how you feel!

Anyone in need of emergency care who can't afford it gets it paid for by taxes. I guess doctors have this hang up about helping people live, even if they can't afford it. They should have got an economics degree instead of a medical degree. That way less people would be able to live, but our taxes would be lower

Example: Vista Medical Center in Waukegan IL closed down about 2 years ago because of too many non-paying customers. My wife lost her job there. Plus now I will have to be driven 10 miles farther when I get my impending heart attack. Thanks a lot!

Anytime I have to visit an emergency room I bring no documentation. I tell the hospital administration that I'm am not a legal citizen. Although I am a legal citizen by claiming otherwise I don't have to pay my health insurance deductable and walk out feeling better about myself and having a handful of free perscription drugs.

To your question. lets modify it.. Must Emergency Rooms care for people without insurance (Illegal and otherwise) regardless? NO.

Federal law dictates Fair Medical Access for hospitals that accept federal dollars accept all patients regardless of income. Private hospitals that are privately funded, do not need to see everyone. 99% of all hospitals are Federally funded.

Now to your full question, who pays for it. If someone with low income and no insurance, or even insurance and very low income gets treated, they can apply for some form of "charity care" this will write off a percentage of their debt. some programs this can be up to 95% of their costs.. This is a combination of overcharging other patients, federal money set aside to help the poor and a tax write off (in varing proportions.) Now after that 95%, usually it is taken as a loss by the hospital and either is recovered from other fees, or reduction in future services (or lack of increase of those services)

And for those that argue that insured people cannot get the charity care, I have very good insurance, but several 10's of thousands of dollars of hosital care for family members, and (10s of thousands after insurance), we were able to get a write off of 95% because of our total debtness vs what I was making at the time. and I was well over poverty, but the debts I had cancelled alot of that out.

I sat in the ER with my daughter about 3 months ago. If it wasn't a "true" emergency ALL non insured people of legal and illegal status were shipped to the charity hospital.

Actually no one does and most of hospitals have to close because of this. They do have to treat illegals because it is only the humane thing to do.

ANYONE is treated in an emergency room...they can't just kick them to the curb, you know.

Almost 47 MILLION American citizens have no health insurance and are treated anyway. THAT's what is breaking our medical system, not immigrants.

Who do you think pays for this? We do. THat's why we need a national health insurance.
