Such fines were first brought in by the 1996 Immigration and Asylum Act. It is old news which this A W F U L government is trumpeting as new. No doubt they opposed the act when the previous administration laid it before Parliament. |

Excellent idea if the fine is large enough so they won't do it again |

They should get a hefty fine & yes it should have been brought in sooner. |

I think that anyone employing an illegal immigrant MUST have a very good idea that the person is not here legally which is why the businesses are kicking off about it. |

i think it is a wonderful idea
Arizona where i live has passed a similar law but people are suing to get the law blocked
i agree with you. why didn't they do this a long time ago |

What about sending them to prision?
On what grounds?
If someone employs an illegal immigrant then would they be covered if there was an accident at work?
Would the insurance company refuse to pay out?
If not, then surely the employer has people working for him without any insurance, does that make sense?
I'm just thinking that would be many areas of health and safety, employment law, etc that would be broken by this guy having illegals working for him and so he should end up in court, even prison.
I would think anyone running a business would think twice about employing these immigrants if there was a good chance of a 5 year prison sentance.
Yet again we are just too soft, how will we ever stop this mass illegal immigration while we play around with these half hearted judgements? |

not only should they be fined...they should have thier business license supended on the first offence and revoked on the second...that's what we are doing in Arizona, USA |

i love it, i love it, i love it. I'm about 50 miles from Birmingham and the illegals in the town i live in are starting to take over. we had a riot about 3 weeks ago, the illegals came out about 10 pm, was throwing things at the police, they had sticks and bats. in this town the police try to keep things quiet, they don't like being in the paper. god love session, riley and the other one, can't remember his name. praise god we are cracking down on company's. it is the fault of the company's for hiring them. they know we are having trouble keeping illegals out. illegals know company's will hire them. thanks for the info.
i don't see how it's discrimination when they are illegal. illegal has no color. |

A great idea. And they should also send the illegal back to where he/she came from. |

Only fined???? I think it should be AT LEAST one year in jail for the first offense! |

A fine and jail time would be good. However the fine would have be large enough to get their attention. I believe one million per each illegal immigrant would be enought to get their attention and if you added 25 years at hard labor in prison to it that it would get the required amount of attention and I would bet that only one company would ever be tried and convicted. |

this happened twice in my old job ,on both occasions the employers was told to prevent themfrom working and withold their wages.but both of these immigrants had passed crb checks |

Yes, I believe that companies should be fined for hiring illegals because I used to work for a company that hired illegals. About once a year, someone would report to the authorities that there were illegals there. So the company would fire them. A few months later, they would hire some of the same people back. The company would not get into any serious trouble. Tthat's why they kept hiring the same illegals over and over again. It's just a vicious cycle. They need to be fined enough to really put a dent in their profit margin. |

its a good idea ,the fine should be large enough to bankrupt the employer, they should also jail the owner for 12months per immigrant, |

I think it is a brilliant Idea. I would add that if the Employer had been paying the employee below the Minimum wage then The fine should be enhanced by Double the sum of money he should have paid for the work that was done . This money should be given over to the Unions within the factory. The Employer then will have little to gain from discriminating against legitimate labour and using Slave labour instead just to make larger profits. |

The only problem is that these people find it so easy to obtain fake documents. |

I see one large flaw with this - not so much with the idea but more with the execution of it. There are many immigrants to the UK that are here legally the EU has seen to that. Now, all it takes is for there to be some doubt in a case for an employer to complain about the penalty. Multiply that a few dozen times and people start to sit up and take notice. Then more cases of genuine error emerge (ie, an employer being found guilty when, in fact, the immigrant is in the UK legally). So then employers choose to employ British-born workers. That is all well and good, but it opens up lawsuits at European level. It would cost the country a fortune, either the government or individual employers.
In short, if the government cannot handle this terrible mess in the first place, it has no chance of monitoring the employers. |

Wow . . . my ex boss had 10 Pakistani illegals working for him, strictly "off" the books (I used to do their wages and it was all cash in hand, hush hush no questions asked). Out of his staff of 25 people, 10 were illegals!!!
He would have had to pay a fortune if they'd brought this in. Would have served him right too.
I think people who hire illegal immigrants should be fined. When I worked for this man we often had young lads coming round asking for work and I felt awful having to turn them away saying there were no jobs available when this guy was employing 10 people who didn't even have the right to work in this country and were paying no tax. |

How much can they be fined? Very little I expect, not enough to discourage rogue emokoyers. |

Bit on the lenient side, far better to have some public spectacle made of them. Flogging springs to mind but the health and safety tossers might have something to say about that. |
