I require some clarification on this subject. After applying for the lottery, and then let's take it as winning a 'spot', would I be required to move to the USA immediately or leave it for a later time?
Also, I have heard that after being drawn, many people do not actually get the visa. Why is this and what stops them?
I personally would love to get a Green Card in the USA, but do not want to move there for a few years yet. Therefore I'm not sure if I would be able to go through the process at this stage.

If you are approved, you need to move to the US within 6 months or your application becomes invalid. You cannot postpone it for a few years.
The reason some people are drawn but do not get the visa is that after further investigation, they do not meet the requirements. They don't bother looking into peoples' backgrounds before they are picked because several million people apply and there are not enough resources to check every applicant.
If you are not ready to move to the US now, don't apply. If you apply, get approved, and don't move to the US, you cannot apply again. So wait until you are able to move to the US within 6 months |

you have to be able to afford to move - which means paying for documents, medical exams and airfares. |

I'm not sure about the time limitation on exercising your selection, but being drawn does not actually get you the visa...it puts you in top consideration and relieves you of meeting certain prerequisites in the application process, |
