No, you don't get a green card immediately. You have to go through the process the same as everyone else.
Depending on whether you're currently in the US or not makes a difference to the time line. It took me 20 months to join my husband after he moved back to the US. We'd been married for over 9 years when it was finally approved.
As far as divorce goes, it depends on the length of your marriage. Less than 2 years and you'll only have conditional residency which means that you have to apply to have the conditions removed. That's difficult to do if you're divorced. If you have permanent residency (10 year card), you would keep it and be eligible for citizenship 5 years after the date of approval (in the case of most green cards, that's the date you enter the US). |

The INS is very adept at finding who is REALLY a couple and who is getting a marriage "in-name-only" just for the green card.
People go to JAIL for that stuff, in case you have not heard . . . .
If your marriage is anything fake, . . . the American will be prosecuted, and you will be deported.

You can apply for a green card right away, it takes about three months to get the work permit to work and about a year to get the actual green card. Your initial green card will be a temporary one for two years. If you divorce while on the temporary card, your green card is cancelled. After two years, you can apply for a permenant card. After that, if you divorce you can keep your green card and apply for citizenship. |

If you marry an American to get a green card, the process takes at least 4 years. They won't even look at your application until you've been married for at least 2 years. You'll be able to get a work permit relatively quickly, but the green card takes forever. Plus, you have to live together, have tons of joint accounts (bank accounts, credit cards, mortgage, cars, etc) to prove you're really married and not just doing it for the green card.
If you get a divorce prior to getting the green card, you have to give a damn good reason as to why you got divorced i.e. your spouse beat you up. Otherwise, they'll get suspicious and your card will be denied.
Once you get the green card, you can do whatever you want. But you have to stay married until you get that green card. It's a very long term investment, so I suggest if you do marry an American, marry someone you actuallly love, since you'll have to stay together for awhile. |

No one gets a citizenship just by marrying an American citizen. |

No you do not gt one right away. The US citizen partner must file for a K1 of K3 visa for you. The process will take 4 to 8 months and will cost about $3000.
They need to hire an immigration consultant to do it as it will end up costing a lot more if they make a mistake trying to do it for cheap. |

From my understading it varies from country to country. Here in the Philippines it takes about 6 months to file once the couple is married.
Now, I don't know whether 6 mos. is fast enough for you...
As for the divorce, of course the divorcee still gets to keep his/her status unless the marriage was proven to be a sham in the first place. |

You get green card a week or more after your first entry to the states as immediate relatives of a citizen. Would be faster though to get a spousal or K3 visa. Check both links.
