Going to get married in the UK, Fiance Visa Question?

Going to get married in the UK, Fiance Visa Question?

I'm from the US, and my boyfriend is from the UK. We met online 3 years ago, and have been physcially together for a year. We have decided that the easiest way to be together is to just get married. Although we wanted to do it the traditional way, with a nice wedding and everything, we wont be able to afford it right now. So we're just going to elope in London, and then have a wedding ceremony in a couple of years when we save up. ...BTW, I HATE immigration laws. They're so complex and really unfair to couples in our situation that just want to live together.

Anyways, I know that they require you to get married within 6 months of being granted a Fiance visa, but I won't be able to work during this period of time. ...What if we just get married right away, and then I apply for a spousal visa and get accepted...will I be able to work right away after that, or do I have to wait a certain period of time? Also, once we're married and I apply for a spousal visa, that means that I'll be a UK citizen then, right? So does that mean i'll be able to apply to go to a university too? Basically, what am I allowed to do, and what am I not allowed to do? It's very confusing to me.

I dont have a whole lot of money, and neither does he right now, so I would want to be able to work after we get married. This way the money that I have now wont just dwindle away, and i'll be able to start saving.

After you get married, you will need to adjust your status with the Home Office to a spouse visa. Right now it takes about 14 weeks to process an application, and you cannot work until you get your visa.

You do not get citizenship automatically by marrying a British citizen. The earliest you would be able to apply for citizenship is after being married for 3 years and continously living in the UK during that time (you can't stay for 2 years, then go back to the US for a year, then come back to the UK for example)

Marlebone Magistrates will charge you around £20 to marry in London, I don't know the exact new rules but there is plenty of hotel work to get by on while you wait for papers, they can't stop it once you're married, visa or no visa. It does require 5 years residence and not getting busted to go for the British citizenship tests though. The US can't stop you either, though they will cost you a lot more in paperwork and nonsence.

Depending on which country you plan to live in (US or UK), you need to follow THEIR fiance visa laws. In the US, if you apply for and receive a fiance visa, you must marry within 90 days, not 6 months. Additionally, you must marry INSIDE the US. After you marry in the US, your husband cannot leave until the 485 petition is processed. My husband and I married out of the country (I am a US citizen, he is South African), so that we could go on a honeymoon and plan the date and time of our wedding. This process, while it gave us the date we wanted, takes a lot longer than the fiance, so I recommend the fiance. Finally, you need to check the UK's citizenship laws. Marriage does not equal citizenship. In the States, your husband would have to apply for a greencard and meet the residency requirement (5 yrs) before applying for citizenship.
