How long does someone have to have worked with a compnay before they can apply for a green card? (I have been working with my present company for 7 months so far on a new H1B visa)

As long as US Employer wants to file for green card for you, they can start anytime they want to.
First your employer must file Labor Certificate with Department of Labor through PERM, which take about 6 to 12 months.
Then with the approved LC, your employer will file I-140 Petition for Foreign Worker. That takes from 9 to 18 months, based on your Preference. After the I-140 approval, you will be given Priority Date. Only when your PD becomes before the Visa Bulletin cut off date, you can finally file I-485. As of May Visa Bulletin EB 3 is Unavilable. That could take from 3 years to 10 years.

Therefore if you are EB 3, you are looking at about 5-6 years to 10-12 years until you get green card. |

It can be filed on the same day you join the company. It depends on your company policies. Talk to your HR. Waste no time.
There are few processing centers.. Vermont, Taxes, California etc... It depends on where you are located. Also, your qualifications. Usually it takes about 3 to 5 years. Check out USCIS.gov for the current processing dates by center. |
