H1B1 visa still valid?

I entered the US on a H1B1 visa last August. Got laid off in November. Returned to my home country, and is now looking for another teacher position this fall. My US work visa still says valid till the end of this November. But I'm out of legal status. Am I allowed to re-apply for extension or do I have to get my prospective employer to file a new petition for another work visa for me? May I continue using my H1B1 visa? I was on a temporary Authorized to Work Social Security #. My previous employment had caused bad credit on my file due to leasing of a car. Am I allowed to get a new SSN on a new work visa when I re-enter the U.S or do I have to use my old SSN?

You would not need a new H-1B visa if you were successful in finding a new employer who would petition for you, assuming that the petition is approved.

However, the filing deadline for H-1B visas for Fiscal Year 2010 (FY 2010) is April 1, 2009. The current law limits the cap of H1Bs to 65,000 as the number of aliens who may be issued an H1B visa or otherwise provided H-1B status, and the number of petitions submitted on April 1 exceeded 65,000. Now there will be a lottery to pick the lucky petitions.

The earliest you could return to the U.S. as an H-1B for a new employer would be Oct 1, 2011. If the H-1B visa in your passport is valid until or beyond that date, you could use it, but don't count on using it before that time unless you are called back to work by the employer who laid you off.

EDIT: Did you mean H-1B or H-1B1? The H-1B1 visa is open only to citizens of Chile and Singapore. Qualifications for the H-1B1 are identical to those for the regular H-1B visa.

SSN is for life.. you do not get a new one.
New H1B visa has be to sponsored by your new employer or extension from the old employer. The old H1B might look valid on your passport. But, your previous employer might have notified the USCIS about your visa status when you were laid off in November.

I dont know about the SSN but for the H1b visa you have to get another one. new employer means new H1b. good luck.
