From what I see and read constantly, England if not the whole United Kingdom is on its way to change, if not lose, its former identity. If Europeans were the main immigrants, they, as someone already said, would adapt and become English as many have done in the past, but when the immigrant has a religion that has a stronger hold, very ancient traditions and customs, very disimilar food customs, it is unlikely that they will adapt and become absorbed. Further, when a government is too concerned in making them happy even changing or considering changing the laws so that they feel more at home, then, it wil be the British society the one that will change, and that will be the loss of the former identity.

Pity. The United Kingdom, with all its failings, was an example of civilisation, good manners and ethics. It will be a loss for the world to see it go.

Yes i think so. When i go into the city (London) its like one is in a different country.....in fact it is sometimes difficult to actually meet an englishman or woman. I live in a small english town with a population of 30,000 people. When i venture into the town centre to do some shopping it is commonplace to hear people conversing in languages other than english. I plan to emigrate asap....had enough of this place, been here 46yrs already!

Not quite yet, but it'll happen! I'm afraid that it's all too late to do anything now. The only way to do anything about it is the Radical Right way, and that's unthinkable!
And it's New Labour that has gotten us into this position.

All it's doing is fanning the flames on British nationallism, which is what the policy of free movement of persons throughout the EU is also doing. It's putting a strain on every developed EU state societally and economically and cannot continue for much longer. Hell Yeah!!!! The situation is going to get worse and worse under this government! This is not the UK anymore we are no longer allowed to be English etc just in case it may offend! I can speak fluent French and Spanish because when I visit their country I respect them enough for them to able to understand me and not shove ignorance in their face.
We should have border control like Australia!
I am not racist but if someone wants to start a new life in a new country then they should respect the country they are moving to and then learn the language and laws etc. How many Polish shops are there now? We have not lost our Identity but our labour Government has lost its bottle and needs their VOTES. They are Gambling seriously now. What's a UK identity? Hasn't been one for decades around here.

No one I know other than the occasional Rangers fan refers to themselves as British or a UK citizen.

Everyone else is Scottish, English, Welsh or Northern Irish. Might as well get used to it, fella.

Hopefully the large influx will press us into accepting ourselves as being European. The concept of identity is in many ways a sign of insecurity and longinf to be something else other than what we are. The English have always been transient and aside from the international football, we are not a race of flag waving nationalists. It is possible that this sense of national pride has come about as we see other nations living amongst us who are very nationalistic (notthing wrong here) especially African and Eastern Europeans, who will have their flags attached to their cars, clothing and most other items on thier person! Maybe this has caused us to think, oh dear, we should be doing this. I hope that our identity is in our accpeting and understated nature, our ability to reach out and help those in trouble and offer sanctuary to thiose who have suffered. Lets remember that most of the poverty abroad (esp Africa) was caused by our hand and we have benefited hugely from this. So instead of dwellingon the past maybe we should try and right the wrongs by using our affluence and power to build bridges and peace not bombs and poverty.

Hello - The UK is a multi-cultural society and has been for a while so this question comes a bit late in the day.

Pretty much. UK always had a large number of immigrants, the only thing was they were from other European countries, so they integrated quickly such as Joseph Conrad who came from Poland. Hell even Henry James an American became a famous British writer.

The new immigrants are now Africans and Asians, including Muslims who want to turn the UK into what they left.

Yes but not due to immigrants, its cycle is over just like the US, hastened by leaders who said they were spoken to by God to go and introduce democracy and capitalism so that some years up the line that country could be in the same position as they are now.

Let each country forming the UK claim full independence and let the English languish in their memories - remain subjects and retain loyalty to an over privileged monarch!

I don't think so. UK still has it's own culture there are just more people with various cultural backraounds. In the end they'll just all adapt to the british culture.

Certainly not!! I'm British and I never felt more sure of my identity as a British citizen. What it means to be British today may not be what it was 30 years ago but everything evolves and gets stronger by doing so. Immigration has massively aided this process and enriched all our lives.

"lost it's identity now"? Britain has always had a massive influx of immigrants, that has been a constant throughout it's history. Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Romans, Normans.... need i say more? Being an immigrant race defines what Britain is and always has been.
