The Trees
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with The Trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.
The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced the're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"These oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

the song itself is about trees, yes. but the meaning behind the two trees( maple and oaks) fighting are about society. Group and individuals if you didn't get , that is what it is about.... its about society.
The maples are the weaker, disadvantaged people or maybe they just think it (selfishness-greed?) that try to blame the advantaged for their problems, when really a little hard work might lead them to success. (success isn't always about money) The oaks are the advantaged people that get blamed for "greed" or whatever but at the same time they don't look like they understand the struggle of the disadvantaged.
You have to understand why those trees were chosen. The maple doesn't need the sun to live they can live and grown in the shade. They are fast growning-though it is also an invasive species in some regions. But they do put on a good show.. The Oak takes growing slower but strong, usually healthy, Tall. They make the best good shade. Great for shelter. Strong enough for swings, tree houses and many fun things. Many homes would love the oak there in their yard unlike many other trees it's not something that will give it's fruits right away. .
For a forest to grow and develop into such nice habitats, there needs to be an almost perfect balance between the different species that live in the forest. If one tries to crowd-they all suffer. There is room for all but they have to behave well near each other to live in Harmony
We did not just wake to up a changed polluted selfish greedy world over night. Over the years our lives have become centered around the "me" lifestyle. Today everything is about what you want, how you want it, and when you want it. Our lives have become about our own instant gratification. No different with those in Government than people
, many people 'compromise' more than they would like to and we all kinda suffer.
I wouldn't say that it is anti-humanitarian in stance. It is more of a warning (like some of their other songs) that when "equal" rights are pushed too far (particularly when motivated by jealousy, greed or selfishness as opposed to a sense of true fairness and justice), the end result may be that everyone becomes "equally" subjugated by a totalitarian regime in the name of "the greater good."
It's about the have's and have-nots.
The song is about how greedy people are when they see people with more than them. In this case, the maples think they are entitled to the sunlight that they have not but undeservedly feel they are entitled to because of their lesser ability. They think that by the oaks being superior, they did not give the maples the opportunity to get it.
equality does not mean total uniformity. Men and women, old and young, are all represented in this world that includes people from many, many racial, linguistic, national, and economic backgrounds. As individuals, we have different mental and physical abilities. We are not equal there/ But those differences do not make some superior or others inferior. Rather, such differences result in a delightful variety. If used right and never for bad. And greed on either doesn't enter in
What do you think--does it apply today ? And should the oak give up what it has for the maple. Or should the maple understand the difference between need and want ? Any views on this welcomed.

Good question. It requires you to think. Maybe that is why one couldn't answer it. Or maybe has other issues besides not being able to think.
Honesty is difficult because it requires you to tell the truth, all the truth, whatever it is. And this comparison brings it out well.
It is a case of have nots and wants of the maple but not need.
And the Oak has it so we begrudge them for it.
Is not like the maple had it and lost it through the oak stealing it.

It is a good question. One of the best ones I have seen for awhile. And does require some thinking.
Usually we don't care for something like big corporations and how they got their wealth. But someone brought out a good point.If we never had it to begin with than it is a case of us being upset of have nots. Jealousy, envy, greed
Should the oak move over just because someone else wants but not entitled to it Or is the oak being greedy?
As far as illegal immigration the song and video could apply to that just as well.
