A confidential informant who sets up stings for police testified Thursday that he heard, but did not see, the gunbattle that killed undercover Houston police officer Henry Canales last year.
Albert Saavedra, known as “Red Shoes,” said he was paid $1,000 to set up the June 23, 2009, undercover operation in which Canales tried to sell $35,000 worth of flat-screen televisions and laptops that he said were stolen.
Xiomara Mendez-Rosales, 37, and Andres Nava-Maldonado, 42, are charged with felony murder and engaging in organized crime.
Both are illegal immigrants and could face life sentences if convicted.
Prosecutors have said Roberto Pedroza Carrillo shot and killed Canales, 42, after Carrillo, Nava, Mendez and a 16-year-old girl arrived at a parking lot near Hillcroft and Bellaire to complete the deal for $6,500.
Saavedra said he approached Mendez at a flea market where she operates a booth and offered to sell her the “stolen” electronics.
“Because if she was honest, she would have just said no,” Saavedra said through a court interpreter.
Defense lawyers for Mendez and Nava are expected to cross-examine Saavedra on Friday.
Surveillance video
Jurors on Thursday also saw surveillance video of Saavedra standing outside a storefront across the parking lot as shots rang out. Carrillo was shot dead by Canales and another undercover officer in a gunfight that included more than a dozen shots.
Casey Keirnan, an attorney for Nava, and Bob Loper, an attorney for Mendez, have argued that the pair had reason to believe Carrillo would shoot Canales.
The trial, in its eighth day in state District Judge Mary Lou Keel's court, is expected to last about three weeks.
Nava and Mendez were indicted last year on charges of felony murder, which requires prosecutors to show they caused Canales' death while committing a felony.
Neither was charged with the murder of a police officer because Canales did not have time to identify himself as an officer.
