How can I obtain dual-citizenship with Canada?

As you may know, Canada passed a law on the 17th saying people who were born Canadian citizens and had American born children are automatically eligible for dual-citizenship.

Now, how can I obtain dual citizenship. I am a citizen of the U.S. and am 14 years old.

My Great-grandfather was born in London, Ontario and my grandfather was born here in Massachusetts, USA. Since my GRANDFATHER would automatically have the option for dual-citizenship, would he be able to sponsor me for a US-Canada citizenship?

My mother and step-father have already said they would sign any documents needed to make this happen.

If my grandfather is not able to sponsor me, what ways are there for me to get dual-citizenship.

I'm not sure if you grandfather can do this, he is a Canadian citizen on the new law but can't pass it directly. If he were a resident of Canada or planning to be, his child could be sponsored, but I'm not sure about grandchild.

I suggest you read up on the new laws at this link and you might be able to call the call center and ask them your question. But as I understand it, you can't do this...

sorry you are third generation born outside of Canada and you do NOT qualify for canadian citizenship.

On April 17, 2009, the law changed for people born outside Canada. It limits Canadian citizenship to the FIRST generation of children born outside Canada to Canadian citizens. This means -
- a child born outside Canada in the second or subsequent generation after the new law comes into effect will not become a Canadian citizen automatically at birth, and
- a person born in the second or subsequent generation outside Canada before the new law comes into effect and who is not already a citizen will NOT become a citizen under the new law.

It's only the first generation that is eligible.

Your grandfather is presumably normally resident in the US, so would be unable to sponsor you.

To gain Canadian citizenship, you need to apply, alone or through a sponsor, for permanent residence. There is a minimum age.

Then you need to live in Canada for three years, pass a test of knowledge of Canada, and apply for citizenship.

When you are older, with a trade or profession, and some work experience, you can apply yourself.
