How can I stay in Europe permanently after graduation?

How can I stay in a country after I graduate with my PHD? I am American and going to get my degree in Norse and Viking Studies. Since we never had Vikings in Missouri and all of the research is being done in the UK and Scandinavia (and so on) how can I stay there to continue in research... longer than the two years allowed to graduates. Since this is my career field I was thinking more long term.

You can try to get hired as a professor at a European university who would sponsor you for your visa.

Or as a PhD holder, you are eligible to apply for the Tier 1 visa in the UK which does not require company sponsorship and allows you to look for a job on your own
