How can my 'unskilled' partner move from South Africa to the UK?

My partner of just over a year has had to leave the UK and return back to South Africa as his 2 year working/holiday visa has expired. He is unskilled so can't return easily as visa's are hard to get unless you have a degree, etc. He would like to return so what would be the best route to try? Would it be easier to get a prospective employer to apply for him? We can't get a long term partner visa as we have to be together over 2 years and prove we lived together and had joint bank accounts which is ridiculous! Please help!!!
