Basically if you were born BEFORE 1977 then you MUST wait until after April 17, 2009, for the new canadian citizenship act to come into force before you can apply.
If you were born after 1977 then you can ignore all this and jump straight to the second last paragraph below that starts with "if your mom....".
On April 17, (2009) the law will change and many former Canadians will reacquire citizenship. Find out more about the new law and who is affected.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/rules-citizenship.asp
new citizenship rules
People who were born outside Canada, on or after January 1, 1947 (but before 1977) in the first generation born abroad, to a parent who was a Canadian citizen at the time of the birth.
The law gives citizenship to the following individuals who have never been citizens:
People who did not take the steps necessary to become citizens and who were born outside Canada on or after January 1, 1947, in the first generation born abroad to a parent who was a Canadian citizen at the time of the birth.
If you were born between 1947 and 1977, then you MUST wait until April 17th, before you can apply.
You apply by following the below directions.
If your mom was born in canada then you need to take her canadian birth certificate, her marriage certificate and your birth certificate to the nearest canadian consulate (or the embassy in DC) to be registered as a canadian citizen.
Once you have submitted those forms (contact the consulate/embassy first to get the right forms you need to fill in) and the certificates, they will process your application, and then eventually you will get a Canadian citizenship card. You can then use that citizenship card to get a Canadian passport. |

Born outside Canada after February 14, 1977
You are a Canadian citizen
You are a Canadian citizen if you were born outside Canada and:
you were born after February 14, 1977; and
you had a parent who was Canadian at the time of your birth.
Go to a Canadian consulate and apply for a passport! You may need some paperwork but they should be able to tell you what yo need. |

Go to the Federal Building, they will probably tell you to go to the Canadian Embassy and prove that one of your parents is Canadian. |

Hi thank you for any input I may obtain from this post. My name is Andy I was born in New York with my sisters. My parents are Italian and Swedish born who migrated here in the 60's. I am a working professional an Executive Chef for a corporation here in the United States. My dad has passed away over 12 years ago. He was was born a Italian in Fuime Italia. Mussolini and Hitler rained through Europe and this area which was turned into Slovic provinces. He left for his life with his friend Leveo. One of the last phrases I heard from dad is that he wanted to die as Italian. He never heard this but, the Houston embassy contacted me and said he did. Where he grew up is now Rijeka, Croatia. My mother has a birth certificate from Sweden. I tried to obtain my fathers, but Rijeka was communist for a long period of time I don't know where to start. My mother is still alive here in the states and would like any information for my family (my sisters) concerning dual citizenship to carry on. I'm slightly in tears right now and would greatly any input to further this. Thank you. |
