You cannot obtain an employment visa. Only an employer can obtain an employment visa. After the employer obtains it, you can enter the US. Then you can also obtain your Social Security number, etc.
For Canadians, your employer can probably get you a TN visa under NAFTA instead of having to apply through the overloaded H1-b visa system. I hope you have the proper education and experience requirements to qualify for an employment visa, because if you do not meet such requirements, there is no way an employer can apply for work visa for you. Only after you obtain the TN or other visa can you enter the US.
Canadians have visa-free travel to the US ONLY for tourism! Ditto for Americans traveling to Canada. No employment, no school, etc. Violating Visa Waiver Program regulations means you are permanently barred from using VWP, and also means you are unlikely to ever get a visa. Break the law & you are punished.
If you are working in the US without an employment visa, you have violated immigration, labor and other laws and you must leave the US, be barred from reentry, etc. |

About $50, a letter from the employer, and go to the border for a TN visa. Certain restrictions apply but thanks to NAFTA it's fairly easy to do.
So you better hurry up because Obama has already said he's taking Clinton's NAFTA away. |
