How do the people in the people in the UK and Ireland think of the USA?

They tend to come across as loudmouthed, fat, over self confident, greedy and braggars. This view is portrayed by the non american (US) media. Their own media predicts them as victors in the majority of cases. (no american ever loses a battle or war).
The fact is different. They are a people of who only 10% have or will travel outside the USA. This 10% tend to be financially secure and boy do they let you know. Everything is greater, bigger and better in the USA.

The fact is, the majority are a hard working nose to the grindstone people eking out an existence to keep their families fed and together. Live is difficult no more or no less than other world citizens.

The attitude of a few travellers paints the inaccurate picture of the whole nation.

I have no problem with the USA or its people, I think its a great country and the majority of the people there are good, I even have American friends and have been to the USA twice. A minority of the people have given the country a bad name, but I do not judge the country or the people on the actions of the minority

The negative stereotype is that they have a low IQ are usually fat, egotistical, evangelical, wacky, brash, and still believe that their government are some sort of benevolent god like power, saving the world from evil. Also there is the opinion that most of them don't know anything about the world outside the USA.
However I have met plenty of americans and I can say that most of the time, they are friendly and fun loving if a little quirky. I love their overwhelming sense of optimism.
Most people in the UK don't like the American governments foreign policies, but do like the american people. It probably won't go down too well if you start saying how great you think america is. But if you are visiting the UK most people will be nice to you if you are nice to them.

We used to think of you as fat and brain washed but I reckon we in the UK have overtaken you for obesity, political correctness and the sheer stupidity of petty laws. I would rather live in the US than in the UK as it is now.

I have many American friends and they are some of the loveliest people I have ever met. Of course there are exceptions like any where else but on the whole Americans are great.

Americans who travel around the world have few problems because they are the type of people who are open to other cultures and don't engage in any contentious behaviour.
Just as ANY nationality Canadians, Irish and British included US tourists can be a pain at times when they expect the world to conform to their norms and don't respect the local way of life. The politics of the US affect almost everyone in the world and for that reason everyone will have an opinion. Not many people in the UK or Ireland have approved of your current administration's policies but most are able to separate people from government. Some countries have a tradition of debate (not usually the UK) and the people will want to engage you in political debate in bars and cafes but its not personal - if you don't like it then I suppose it is easier to say your Canadian. If anyone in the UK wants to engage in political debate in a bar or pub......say you are Canadian as you probably won't get any sense out of them through the alcoholic haze. US sub-prime debt and the effect on the global economy may be a better subject!

i think it is sad that people like president bush make america look bad like getting to involved with other countries for the wrong reasons. my children have visited the usa on many occasions as their father lives in chicago and have always enjoyed being there as the people are so warm and friendly,
so i do not think it is your average american that makes it look bad it is the people in power it is also the same in my country england people in power never really listen to the people and perhaps our countries would be a better place if they did

It's a good country with now a lower cost of living because of the value of the dollar.

I think the US needs to make gun laws more restrictive.

I'd like to live in New York one day.

Need to work on improving health. Cost of healthcare is going to be a big drain on the economy in the future.

And you need universal healthcare like other civillised Western nations. I've seen "Sicko" and was pretty appalled at what goes on over there with people who are underinsured or poor.

Scotland See's the USA for what it is become. fat, rich and lazy, oil guzzling fiends ready to kill the world in order to have a fat rich lazy life style.

they drive their wee cars on the blood of women and children killed by the US military War machine. while the US government steals nations blind of their natural resources.

that's why they say they are from Canada. they are afraid to stand up and say i support murder and maiming so i can have a cushy life with out a care for the rest of the world.

really? I'm not surprised they say they're from Canada. A lot of people here (London) seem to view most Americans as sort of obese, a bit out of touch, and generally a bit slow. and perhaps even adorable in a patronising way. the whole patriotism flags outside your houses thing makes us laugh, and your president makes us want to hide because he is so embarrassing as a representation of the USA, and is probably partly responsible for this incorrect view of the country people have.
I've been to America a few times, and yeah i know you're not all obese, and you're not all dumb, and you're not all annoyingly happy all the time (though everyone who works in Walmart seems to be constantly and irritatingly thrilled that you are there), but the impression that we get over here really doesn't reflect the average American. Like the racism, and the whole everyone MUST believe in God sort of thing we view as rather weird, and when you get tourists over here poking beefeaters and taking photos as they hang out of red phoneboxes making stupid comments like "are you Australian? because you all sound the same" and "is this where the queen lives?" outside every single castle in the country, you kinda wonder what's going on in that country of yours, and what happened to school....

I don't know many "people in the people in the UK" - I only know the people in the UK - some of those work in the pancake industry, tossing pancakes. The name we give those people is similar to that we regard many Americans as - Pancake Makers............

if they are ashamed of the u s then move ,,,who gives a rats a--what they think of us we were good enough to save there butts in ww2 so if they feel they dont like us now who cares...
