How do we solve homelessness?

Someone mentioned China. I was just there on business. They had many more. Lots of beggars which included children, parents with children, handicapped, etc. They don't have the solution but if you study why, it would show us how to solve ours.

Homelessness in the United States was really quite low before the 1980's. So what happened? American homelessness largely came about when the Reagan administration, who believed homelessness was a choice, decided to cut public spending on mental institutions. This put many people who would have been in mental institutions out on their own in the streets, parks and under bridges of urban areas. Take the extreme case of China -- there is no safety net whatsoever. If you were unfortunate enough to be born poor and handicapped, your choices are to beg, steal, or die. It was so heart wrenching to see mothers begging while they and their kids were starving to death in country where economic growth has been double digit for over a decade. Being rich was glorious, while being generous to the needy was unknown.

Buy some bunk beds and invite a couple of homeless to live with you.

i was homeless for a few years and then it all changed for me when a stranger walk up to me and nugded me on the sholder and gave me a 5 dollar lottery tickit and said gl to me, i checked it a few days later a found that i had won $157,000 i never found the man that gave me life again i would sure love to give some back to him for his generous kind offer. so there is hope out ther for homelessness i was just one of the lucky few

microloans is a great start. open up and regulate homeless shelters. education reform. start up more job training centers where people can get trained and get their foot in the door. build more rehabilitation centres so the addicts can clean up. theres lots we can do. and most of it would actually save the country trillions of dollars. it costs less to open treatment, homeless chelters and schools than it does to sustain them in prisons. think smart, be creative, and people will clean up and work.
fixing the economy honestly would also be a great place to start
we also need to look at how people become homeless in the first place. many lose their jobs, go trhough divorces that costs them a lot of money, disability, lawsuits..whatever. now, this is the majority of the homeless. thats why i focused much of my answer to job creation. but throwing these people in jail if they dont work wont work and HASNT been working. BUT, we can tell them to join the centers i brought up or they can spend time in a detention center.

Ship all the illegals back and open up jobs and housing for American Citizens.

First of all, believe it or not, some of those people are there by their own choice. The ones who want off the streets need to know that there are programs to help them. If all else fails they can just claim they are immigrants, that'll get them housing and welfare.

Haven't you heard? All we have to do is send all the illegals back and everybody will have a home.

Wait a minute....I coulda sworn we had homeless people BEFORE illegals.....my bad!

No idea how to solve it! But I'm sure the illegals are to blame SOMEHOW! If we all put our heads together I'm sure we can think of a way to pin it on them!

Well if the gov was not into spending so much on illegals and funds going to other countries, maybe they would have enough to help out the homeless to get them on their own feet or into homes if they are mentally ill. A lot of homeless get arrested just for being homeless and not even committing a crime. Then we have the illegals who knowingly are commiting a crime and everyone knows, yet they get away with it.

there is no real way to solve homelessness, there will always be drug addicts, who choose not to have a home; also, there are tons of people out there who lose everything. It happens every day. All we can do is pray, and help as many as possible. And for those of you who say 'get a job', you should know that if your homeless, you can't have a job, you have to have an address to have a job. Trust me, I work with a ministry that feeds the homeless. It's awesome.

Plan "A"..... Re-define "Home".
An urban ghetto apartment with electric power, flush toilet, curbs, sidewalks, gutters and garbage collection that take 75 % of your working income is not a "HOME".

Rural areas open to "homesteaders" (poor people) have been legislated out of existence, where you use to be able to live with some degree of dignity in a tent, piano box, or travel trailer till you get your log cabin built... haul wood, haul water... use an outhouse... Oh my...

Today's "democratic" solutio is to "keep em in the Ghetto", hook em on drugs and alcohol, then get em in a government
"program" .

Well 2 start with people need 2 stop being drunks & get a job cause most of the homeless people around here collect cans & drink all day that's sad.They need 2 get a life & think of their children which they won't cause the bottle is more important.

Excellent question and one that should be addressed!
Right now, we are so covered up with illegal aliens, that the homeless persons, have been put on the back burner.
Maybe, one day soon, we will see a change.

We have to invest alot of money for a system that can take bums n give them some sort of easy task, so that they make money or profit the government so that it wont be a burden on the rest of society. China , the nation with the most people, did it by investing 50 million, I believe, to homelessness & they did it. I think its sad that the richest country doesnt want to solve it. They would rather spend it on bombs.

Homelessness will end when enough people care enough to give more money and time to sheltering and training these people.

If we spent as much as we do on planning a trip to Mars, on needs here at home, we just might see some real results,

Guaranteed income would help. There is a school of thought that says there is a basic flaw in our economic theory (and it was fascinating - he proved it again and again) and the way we handle creation of money. One person suggested that we could just make internal money - and who cares how much of it, as long as everyone is provided for - and then deal on a gold standard internationally.

This theory may have had other important implications associated with it, but the book I heard it in was so plausible that it really struck a cord with me. He framed this guaranteed income as an inheritance that every american was entitled to - inheritance from all the forefathers who have made this country what it is today. Even children receive a yearly amount - it's a fascinating idea. No more homeless - no more financial worries. Can you imagine a world where financial stress just does not exist? Where everyone can just live, assured that their basic needs are provided for? One can always work more for luxuries - but to not have to worry about money, not think about it, spend our time and attention on learning interesting things, contributing interesting things, raising our kids in peace. Thrilling!

it would have to be a problem for it to be solved. Not all homeless people are at fault in the situation but most are. If this is homelessness i america we are talking about then it is even less of an issue. We are still the richest country in the world, no matter how hard people say they try to get a job, it is still easier than in any other place on earth. Too many people expect things from others, I think we are just another great dynasty that will kill itself with its own big head.
