It pisses me off BIG TIME. In any other country you have to pay for an interpreter if you are unable to communicate in their language. Example: France.....if you are stopped by the police for a misdemeanour and you don't understand, YOU have to pay for someone to explain it to you. All information eg taxes etc are in French and when a kid goes to school there, there is not a special teacher for them. They HAVE to learn the hard way! UK spends millions on interpreters...who cares, it's only taxpayers money being squandered. |

They don't pay for them ..... I DO !! |

That there should be classes set up for people to learn the language, and that anyone not doing so can go back to the place of their birth. The issue of interpreters has been around a long long time, our local council has plenty because we have a high level of immigrants, so many countries that it must be costing us a fortune.
These are some of the groups that i have come across, Albanian, Somalian, Chinese, Indian, with various respective languages and there are many different from that country, Not all people who come from the European Union that is now, speak English, neither do many from the sub continent and don't want to. Have worked in different areas and dealt like some of your other respondents with people in this situation. And why do we bend over backwards with signs, and leaflets and books in these languages, i think that the one i saw and got enraged about was a train station sign that the Punjabi community had a whinge about because it wasn't in their language as well as English, we are mugs...... |

NG is wrong - it costs thousands to pay interpreters for local government, and many times more to pay for them within the health service. Try making a Freedom of Information request to your local council, hospital or Primary Care trust to find out just how much - then multiply that for every town in the country! |

my mum came across this in her job as a legal secretary.
( YES IT DID UPSET HER )
cases defending foreign criminals costs billions spent on interpreters
but if the lawyer said in English.
" would you like a car, house, money etc " ?
they seem to KNOW exactly what it means.
it's just a way of being awkward, a tactic that they've found along the way can & does wind up the indigenous general public.
they do it because they can.
& i am not exaggerating when i say BILLIONS are spent of explaining in their native tongue their human rights now they're here in the UK. |

It's not the Government who pay for interpreters it is all of us taxpayers. And it's not only for benefit claimants. Every time a foreign national is arrested and claims not to understand English an interpreter is called out at a fee of around £100 is charged. If the case goes to court the interpreter would be called as a witness costing us more.
Now if we were able to claim benefit in their countries or we committed a crime - would they pay for an interpreter for us- I don't think so!!
All immigrants should have to learn English to a basic standard. |

Just rubbish isn't it? Rather than the firing squad, we pay for them to complain about everything |

They would do better paying for more immigration officers,
to check weather these people are entitled to enter Britain or not, my opinion is if you cant speak enough English to explain yourself then you don't get in. |

I'm feed up of paying taxes for all these services - I've seen it 1st hand when I went to sign on (I was in work the next week).. Two asian girls came in the 1st one goes my friend wants to claim but she will need an interpreter!
It is just disgusting! |

Its a joke.
Millions are wasted on these interpretation fees every year.
Before they come here surely they should have a smattering of English? Else how would they get a job?--------Oh yeah, maybe they aren't coming for the jobs. |

It sickens me to the bone, when I was living abroad you got none of this! Out of interest how many immigrants claim who don't speak English and where are they from? |

I agree with what you are saying, this is the only country in the world that does this, no wonder they all want to come here !!!
The sooner we fall in with the way the rest of the world deals with immigration the better, then we might start to solve our immigration problems. |

Interpreters are vital, not just to those making benefit claims, but for legal and business matters too.
LADYMOON - why are British subjects claiming benefits in Spain without speaking Spanish or Catalan? |

When the English go abroad, we are told to learn the laungage of the country we are in, because it is rude/arogant not to do so,
But over here in England we fall over backwards for everyone,
Would the French do the same for the English? NO |

Well if they dont speak the language and the officials dont speak the claimants language, what do they do? Just stare at each other....yes its a problem, but can't see a way around it....unless o course you are suggesting that immigrants don't get Benefits....that's a whole different question. |

why are the U.K. Government paying so much to the interpreters,in the first place.£ioo just to turn up,thousands of people can speak two languishes,it takes no great skill, children as young as seven, do it all the time. this Government always finds ways to wast taxpayers money, the more they wast, the more they take off each of us,also to have all these interpreters, shows they knew immigrants would be claiming benefits in the first place which makes a lie to why they are allowed to come here. |

Well as we are such a kind, christian, terribly nice people who give with one hand and mutter complaints under our breath with our heads turned at the same time, why not ask for volunteers? |

I am an immigrant, I can help to translate and I will not ask for money, but there are very few people from my country here and all of them are working. |

the benefits immigrants bring to UK are far greater than what it takes to pay few interpreters |
