How does having a different point of view make me a criminal?
Find answers to your legal question.

How does having a different point of view make me a criminal?

I am a Hispanic legal immigrant residing in the U.S. I speak English, have a profession, and participate in my community (I just went to a Christmas parade this afternoon to help). Also I try to relate with the American society in my area. It all sounds nice and wonderful until we come to politics. I refuse to be extremist anti illegal, and I refuse to be pro illegal. I am more of a pro amnesty person. I think that some people actually do deserve to become legalized, and others to be deported while we increase our immigration security measure s and improve our immigration system. Now, just because I don't think like most Americans that all illegals should be deported, they treat me like a beaner. Isn't that awful? How a different ideology can really mess up how people look at you. Anyway, just a thought that's been going through my head. I appreciate all opinions.

Siervocal I almost always agree with your answers. You are clear minded and speak the truth. You are who you need to be for whatever reason, the great thing about this country is that we are allowed to have our opinions and we are allowed to disagree with one another. Sometimes around here I feel so much hatred I need to take a break in another category. I applaud you and hope you continue to speak up!!

Try not to take it personally. The minority view always ends up getting kicked around a bit...-But if you hold on to it long enough (& your reasoning is sound), sooner or later most people will end up seeing things your way. Want an example? -After 9/11 our fearless Leader could do no wrong. Today- people are counting the days until he leaves Office. Did He change? No. We the people (most of whom don't have a CLUE), finally woke up. Stand by your Opinions...-because at their very WORST, they're just as good as everyone elses. :)

I wouldn't look at you as a "beaner."
I find that term highly offensive.
I don't agree that anyone should have amnesty. But I only have a problem with people who are breaking the law to come into the U.S. and with the people who aid, abet and hire them.
They don't all come from Mexico.
There is a tremendous influx of Chinese illegals who pay for passage on cargo ships, then jump into New York Harbor at night and swim to shore. They are just as illegal and the people who help them are criminals too.
And yes a different idealogy can mess up how people think of you. I run into it all the time.

ItsJustMe
You are a legal resident of the United States. You are entitled to be here, and you are entitled to your opinions, and thinking is not illegal. If you take any action to help illegal immigrants, that would be illegal. Simply haivng a particular ideology certainly isn't.

The way people behave are the way people are treated. You as an American have the right to defer from the rest of the world but when you do it you have to do it with out attacking or offending and in return you will be treated the same way. I'm a Hispanic just like you and I'm against illegal immigration because is illegal and because is have turned into an invasion from the South and is hurting our way of life like education, health care, housing, wages, etc. Because of all of these and because is an invasion I'm against it. My country is the USA and I will defend it from any body domestic or foreign. You don't have to be extremist to be anti illegal, just right that's all. remember illegal is illegal, period. You just be a proud American and defer from every body respectfully is your right.

machiko_146
A different viewpoint doesn't make you a bad person, or a criminal. The greatness of U.S society is all it's different viewpoints, working together to form the great country we have now. If you were telling people how to hop the border and supplying fradulent Id's-that would be quite another story. It might also help your social plight if you banded together with your other like minds- and vowed to promote harmony between races and stop all the insults and generalizations that go on in both sides.

I appreciate you respecting our American culture and you sound like a great person. However, I would like to know why certain people feel they deserve to take short cuts in our laws? We all have to abide by them and trust me, us Americans rarely like to abide by our own laws as well. I don't want to see people deported, I just want people to respect our countries laws, just like you would be expected to in England, Canada, etc. Also, laws were put in place for a reason; For our protection. For example, by being illegal you are currently operating under a false social security number or a stolen one (I assume, all employers need a social to employ you). I don't understand why you just don't go for it and apply to be a citizen. Sure, it will take time, but I find it disrespectful to all of us citizens (even those who are of a foreign origin) when you are illegal because in a way you are "taking" from our society, but not putting "in."

Just my opinion. Take care.

Opinion: There is no such thing as a 'beaner', it is just a nonsense word. So what does it mean when you say someone treats you like one?

Opinion: You can't be a criminal (in this country) for having an opinion.

Opinion: I don't have to share your opinion. And you don't have to share mine.

It IS lame that people treat you badly after you express a fairly moderate (and I think totally appropriate) opinion. Immigration is such a great problem & is a hot issue for alot of folks. You sound intelligent and like a decent person. It may be easier on you if you try to avoid those discussions--I know it sounds like the wuss way out, still I say, if ya can, make it easy on yourself. And try not to let the name callers get to you.

I do not feel that all illegals should be deported. But I do resent the fact that these people have come to our country to work and enjoy the benefits that come from working and living here and are not paying taxes like the rest of us have to. What I would like the govt. to do would be to give a period of time for all of the illegals to come forward and declare themselves, allow background checks to be done on them and if they are decent people and not harden felons or seriously mentally unstable, that they should be allowed to begin the process of becoming a legal citizen of this country. I have never advocated closing our borders to those persons that seriously want to come here and live the American dream. But if they want to come and live and work here, they have to do it legally and do it like the rest of us; working, living and paying those taxes. I don't like supporting people that wont' work and want to milk the system.

ape2016
I share your views and I think it is a ridiculous waste of time, money and effort to blame all of our "problems" on illegals. People just have to blame someone for their sorry situation and the illegals are any easy target, because they often are afraid to speak up for themselves. I feel that we should liberalize our working visas policy so more immigrants can come here to work and improve their family's lives.

there is massive anti-latino movement in the US and it comes as no surprise that many americans assume all latinos are illegal. however, the laws must be obeyed and those who are illegal are not entitled to the privileges as you and i.

yeah, Im the same way. All you can do is voice your opinion because some people are REALLY against immigrants. I think that they should make the borders harder to get through and they should leave the ones that are here here. I think they should REALLY explain the "legal" way to them so they dont feel so scared to come. i get called names all the time but I defend them, but i was born here so that makes me american as well so they cant really criticize me either. Al you can do is give your opinions and hear others the way your doing it. You should feel like a criminal though. What they are doing is not fair.

Lost. at. Sea.
I agree with you and believe me I'm an American citizen because the USA invaded my country (P.R). In Spain, for example, the immigration from the ex-colonies of South America is a common practice that benefits the 2 countries. Immigration is one of the reasons for the raise of the economical power and the way of living of today's Spain.
Amnesty, for a legal staying to work, is a true possibility in the states. I believe the true reason for the anti-illegal immigration is a racial one. Or not?
Don't worry free thinking doesn't make you a criminal, at least for the moment.

it doesnt. being a black person in this nation has taught me one thing. no matter how successful we are individually, we are all still relegated to some derogatory term. this is regardless of the treatment we've received in the past. what i mean by this is that just because people weren't calling you a beaner before doesn't mean they don't consider you a beaner. i, myself, am still a n-word. this is not because i think i am that. its because im reminded daily that i am in social and professional situations. i think you were, what we like to call, bamboozled into believing that the people in this country respected you. its takes heated situations like the immigration debate for people to reveal their true feelings - feelings that have always existed just under a veil human decency. rest assured those people are about as humanly decent as a monkey in a cage.

While it is awful that you're being treated like dirt because your stance is in the middle, I say that you keep on voicing your point of view. People who talk down to you because of your opinion, well in my case, make me want to voice my point of view even more. It's empowering and you should be proud that you don't think like those people. I know I'm proud that I have an opinion that isn't the majority opinion. It doesn't make you a criminal at all, it means you're not ignorant like some of those who treated you badly because of your stance on an issue that's perceived as either being on one side or the other. Many people fail to recognize that every issue has its gray area, whether they like it or not.

I`m 3rd generation Mexican American, and all my friends and relatives are against the illegal aliens being here as well. All of our forefathers and mothers came here legally. It is not respectful or right for those who do not come here legally and expect to be granted the same rights as the ones who do it legally. They need to be sent back to Mexico or any other country they come from illegally, and return here and establish legal residency.

I do not care if you illegals do not agree with me. Thumbs down to you as well.

Very well said and very similar to my beliefs. Most people who disagree with you will always criticize what you say because you think different than them and therefore you must be wrong, right?! WRONG!! You keep doing what youre doing regardless of what people say because just as you respect other points of view they have to do the same with yours, and if they don't the only thing that says about them is that they are narrow minded and closed off to the fact that people will always think independantly of what they believe. This is something most of us have a problem with at some point or another, some of us just deal with it a little better than others. Dont let them get to you.

jake
I will always say that here in America, we do not and never will reward law breakers. They came here illegally, they knowingly broke one law right there, then just keep on breaking our laws. So no amnesty, it was given in 1986, and we all see now how good that worked.

There is no free ride every one form the Pilgrims to you now have to go through the same channels, there is no such thing as amnesty, we have no idea who you are or what your past is, the fact that most immigrants do not pay taxes is what gets most Americans spun up, and the money that is made here is sent to to there home country's and not back into society, that is the real issue. I do believe that every one should be treated as an equal and that mean every thing from laws, to taxes, to citizenship the rules apply to every one or no one. You sound like a great guy and I hope that everything works out for you, but there are rules and there, there to protect you and me so lets try to fallow them. Good friend and best wishes.

By your logic the answer is easy. I think some murders child molesters, rapists should be given amnesty also, right????

xenypoo
Just because you believe in amnesty, doesn't make you a criminal, it just makes you wrong. You're not acting in America's best interest, you're acting in illegal alien's best interest. You want illegal's to be rewarded for breaking an American law. If you help anyone to do so, then you will be a criminal, by aiding and abetting said illegal alien. Do you believe that American's have a right to make laws? If you don't, then you must think anybody, mexican or not can do whatever they please, and not be prosecuted for it. Is murder, rape, and kidnapping okay with you, as long as an illegal does it? That's about how much sense you make. America has a right to protect itself, and WE WILL!

I have been feeling the hate since I was a young teenager. That was before I express or said anything.I am now 57 and the hate is still there. It amazes me when I hear younger Mexican-Americans say discrimination does not exist anymore. Then it suddenly hits them on the face and they are surprised that it is happening.
I remember telling my father discrimination does not exist anymore.I was 14 at the time.

You say you are a "legal immigrant" living in the US. If that is so, then you have nothing to defend, politically, for yourself being in the USA because you are here LEGALLY. Also, as a legal immigrant, you have the right to your own opinions and free speech in the USA. If you are legal, as you say, you are working above-board and paying your fair share of taxes and thus you are a bonafide contributing member of the US economy and society. Bravo to you! However, I find you to be a "fence sitter" regarding your stance on illegal immigration. You are too weak to take a definite stance. As a legal immigrant, I think you should be grossly offended by illegal immigrants. You paid the fees and stood in line and waited your turn to come to the USA legally. Why aren't you offended that other people think they should NOT have to pay those fees and stand in line and should, in effect, be able to have preferable status to those who do?

Personally, I disagree with you - I do NOT think that ANYONE who came to the USA illegally should become legalized, ever. This would only perpetuate the belief to future illegal immigrants that if they come on in illegally now, they will eventually be rewarded with legal citizenship and this will tell them that they are stupid to apply to come in legally.

I will only agree with you that we need to increase our immigration security and improve our immigration system, but NEVER EVER AGAIN give amnesty to illegal immigrants in the USA!

My feelings are that ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN THE USA SHOULD BE DEPORTED AS THEY ARE FOUND AND LOCATED AND THEY SHOULD BE PLACED TO THE VERY BACK OF THE LINE OF EVER RETURNING TO THE USA LEGALLY AND IF THEY TURN AROUND AND RETURN AGAIN ILLEGALLY, THEN THEY SHOULD DO SOME MAJOR LONG AND HARD TIME IN THE US PENITENTIARY SYSTEM BEFORE AGAIN BEING DEPORTED. This applies to that idiotic Areallano woman who is holed up in a Church in Chicago, as well!

Panacea
Illegals are 2% of the population, yet they are 35% of the prison population. This basically means that the vast majority of illegals are violent criminals. Contrast that with the paltry 3% of illegals who are actually employed in any capacity outside a life of crime.

Basically, what you are doing is advocating criminal activity. Not just the fact that these people are breaking our laws, simply coming here but the statistical fact that most of them engage in a life of nonstop violent crime.

And here is the thing that really pisses me off. My being a puerto rican american, whose community has so generously allowed you to come here and be apart of. The vast majority of the victims of those criminal scum are in the hispanic community.

I am very much in favor of actually revoking the status of people like you and booting you out of my community. You came here to be an american. You must respect our laws and become part of our community. That implies a certain level of responsibility.

If you can't do that, you simply do not belong here.
