It hasn't really. There are lots of chinese restaurants/take aways (many serve traditional kiwi tucker too) but I've been told that most of what they sell is a westernised version of chinese food and that they don't serve food like that in China so go figure.
The only things I can think of are some people do stir fry vegetables in woks at home and you can buy spring rolls at the supermarket.

lots of chinese restaurants all over the country. I grew up in NZ.
They used to use a lot of MSG - I remenber being very sick one night after having dinner at a chinese restaurant.
I never went to into another chinese resturant for 20 years after that. I used to make and eat a lot of home made CHOW MEIN. Delicious.
Now that most chinese restaurants have stopped using MSG, I mght try one again some day. |

Chinese takeaways (or takeouts if you're American) have always been popular in NZ & there have always been alot of them, but most NZers don't bother trying to make Chinese food at home (odd as they do make Indian, Thai, Italian, etc but never Chinese - they always buy it instead, maybe people think it never tastes as good as from the takeaways?). I have heard some Chinese people say that the Chinese takeaways we have here are limited to just one region of China so there is not much variety. I don't really know how else Chinese food has "impacted" us here.
All I know is it's always been popular with Maori's, Pacific Islanders & white NZers so it has always appealed to all the communities here. |
