How is Illegal Immigration bad?

I have to do debates in school, and I got stuck with the topic of illegal Immigration. We (two people) are on the side that wants to keep it Illegal, and the other side (that wants to make it legal) are two of the smartest kids in the 8th grade. I need some more reasons why Illegal Immigration is bad, or elaboration on the reasons I already have:

Diseases, take jobs from Americans, easy entrance for terrorists, Balkanizing (dividing) America, Crime, don't pay their fair amount in taxes, et. c.

The only bad part about illegal immigration is that it makes US citizen laborers look lazy!....that's it!

There is way more positive then negative. They contribute to America in so many ways; like pumping money into our economy, doing the jobs Americans don't want, helping companies make huge profits by working very hard for lower wages, and living side by side with us to give us a better understanding of other cultures.

====================================

Contributions of Immigrants to the United States

Immigrants, both legal and illegal, continue to be attracted to the United States and its opportunities. According to the U.S. Census, in 1990, the number of immigrants was estimated at 28 million. Fourteen years later that number increased to 32 million. Most of the 32 million immigrants are Hispanic with Asians as the second largest cohort. In a report published by the CEA, or Council of Economic Advisers, immigrants were found to positively contribute to the U.S. economy. The data indicate that immigrants contribute more than $30 billion in income for American workers (U.S. born). In terms of innovation per capita, immigrants in the U.S. beat the U.S. born workers. A greater number of immigrants start up businesses compared to native born Americans; their start up pace is estimated to be 40% greater. Other reports indicate that immigrants had a lower probability of ending up in prison and committing crimes, as compared to individuals born in the US. The CEA report also found that immigrant workers in the United States yield a greater output. Immigrants play a role in the country’s macroeconomic growth and their taxes help increase public budgets. The study found that on average, immigrants and their offspring contribute nearly $80,000 more in tax revenue compared to natives. This figure helps to offset the problem that will arise with the nation’s Social Security system, but it will not take care of the problem entirely. Due to the large number of “Baby Boomers” retiring in the near future, the number of retirees will outnumber the number of contributors. The Medicare program has also seen an increase in enrollees and will also benefit from addition tax revenue.

According to national polls, at least 80 percent of the American people now favor cutbacks in immigration quotas....More than 90 percent support an all-out effort to curb the massive illegal immigration."

What you have just read seems as though it were written yesterday. But it wasn't. It appeared as part of a comprehensive study about our nation's immigration crisis published in the May 1982 issue of American Opinion, a predecessor of THE NEW AMERICAN. Written by the late Robert W. Lee, the article carried the title "Immigration: A Problem That Must Be Solved Very Soon." In his wide-ranging review of this already serious border problem, Lee quoted then-Attorney General William French Smith who told a congressional panel on July 31, 1981, "We have lost control of our borders." Losing that control didn't happen overnight.

Sensible immigration policies had been enacted in our nation throughout the 19th century and into the first half of the 20th. After discovering that many of the World War II refugees streaming into the United States from Europe were communists, Congress passed the almost universally supported 1952 McCarran-Walter "Immigration and Nationality Act."

With its requirement for careful physical examination of all entrants and the establishment of quotas, McCarran-Walter remained national policy for many years. Its major provision stated that if 40 percent of the American people were of British origin, then 40 percent of the legal immigrants could be British. Similarly, if five percent of the population had come from Italy, then five percent of those granted immigration could be Italians. The purpose of this policy was simply to maintain the population blend that had built the nation.

Over time, McCarran-Walter faced numerous challenges and was amended in 1965 and 1976 to adjust the national-origin quotas. In 1980, Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) authored and saw enacted a major Refugee Act that undermined the McCarran-Walter approach by establishing an additional quota for refugees, with the term "refugee" broadly defined based on a 1967 United Nations protocol. The new law resulted in Fidel Castro releasing, and the United States accepting, hundreds of thousands of his undesirables who came to our country from the Cuban port of Mariel. The Kennedy measure even authorized supplying federal assistance, including various social services and financial aid, for the refugees who were being welcomed. Thus began the move away from the national-origin quotas as well as toward the policy of providing numerous "freebies" at taxpayer expense for legal and illegal immigrants.

Flood of Illegals Begins

Not surprisingly, the watering down of McCarran-Walter combined with the availability of free social services led to a huge surge of illegals crossing our southern border. What had been a trickle in the 1950s became a flood in the 1980s. But by 1978 the problem had already become great enough that Congress created a select commission to study it.

Led by leftist-internationalist Reverend Theodore Hesburgh of Notre Dame University, the commission studied the matter for several years before recommending amnesty for the millions already here, sanctions for those who knowingly employed illegal immigrants, and stepped-up border enforcement. In response, a 1982 measure known as the Simpson-Mazzoli Act contained each of those recommendations.

The act's amnesty provision generated strong opposition in Congress, and significant dislike for the bill arose from the American people. Congressman Bill McCollum (R-Fla.), its leading opponent in the House, said of Simpson-Mazzoli, "If we leave amnesty in this bill, we are going to take in millions and millions of immigrants in the next ten years beyond the capacity of our institutions to absorb and assimilate." The McCollum-led fight against amnesty delayed the bill's passage, but a later version of the bill won final congressional approval in 1986 and was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.

The government largely overlooked punishing employers for hiring illegal immigrants, as called for by the bill, partly because employers found it difficult to comply and partly because it was relatively easy for employers to get around the requirements for authentication of prospective employees. Beefing up the protection of our southern border was likewise virtually ignored. But, as predicted by opponents, the amnesty provision encouraged many millions of additional Mexicans to cross the border. After all, since amnesty was being offered to millions of illegals already here, there was a reasonable expectation that those who successfully got across the border would not be deported but would eventually be provided amnesty as well.

The flood of illegal immigrants further strained our social-welfare system as well as provided employers with a large pool of cheap labor that hurt entry-level American worker

Sounds like you've got it covered. DEPORTATION NOW for the illegal alien border criminals.

We lose respect world-wide because we cannot enforce our own laws.

Diseases ???.... What about tourist ??? or the ppl that travel overseas ??? they can bring diseases too, so I do not think it is a strong point.

Easy entrance for terrorist ??? The terrorist of 9/11 had legal status (student status), they were not illegal...

Illegal immigrants are bad for the country because they do not pay taxes at all, and they use the free system, (health care, schools, libraries, ect...) It is draining the economy, the crime it is also a good point, (not all the immigrants came to commit a crime, most of them come to work)...

Taking jobs ... The employers (business owners) gave the jobs to the illegals to save some bucks !!! if the employers don't offer job to the illegals they wouldn't come... so this is a problem that is created by the business owners also !!!

You can support your ideas with news and info that you can find in internet, like crime committed by illegals, ect...

Good luck,

Its bad because we have to pay more money for tax and the money we make they take back to where they acme from making it that much harder to make or keep money.

Neither of the two answers above explore the nuances or subtleties of this complex problem. C'mon folks, it's a very complicated issue. Don't just paste an article in the box!

One of the most interesting aspects of this debate that seldom gets discussed: What about the millions of folks here who have relatives at home in Mexico, India, Philippines, etc. who wait for up to 20 years for their relatives to be granted immigrant visas. Because people who wait patiently and pay their fees all those years get very upset when they hear others can just cross the border and work illegally.

Another interesting debate is how children born in the USA of illegal immigrants are harmed; actually, their entire families are emotionally and financially harmed when the families are split if relatives are deported. Because the US citizen child has the right to stay when the parents do not. One side of the debate says that the parent(s) knew all along they were illegal and only had the kid(s) to legitimize their stay; the other side says it's a crime to separate families.

So you've got a lot of topics to debate here!

ICE 'em
They mooch off of tax payers, abuse the public educational system by having way more children enrolled then they ever begin to pay for with property taxes living 10 plus to a one bedroom, they increase the crime rate, they drive with no insurance/license causing wrecks and deaths, they loiter in front of Home Depot's and other businesses and make it look just as trashy as when hobos do it, they use the emergency room as their primary care doctor for every sniffle and then don't pay the bill, I could go on and on.

It is true that as illegals, they do not get the medical exams required before entering our country and bring in many illnesses.
One other law for only letting in a certain number of people is every country only has a certain amount of natural resources which illegals are depleting. Some states are already low or running out of water for instance.
